I thought about it before buying the black macbook, but buying a refurb didn't make sense. With sales tax, the refurb would have cost $1413. The new MB I purchased was $1494 with no tax, free shipping, and a $100 rebate. In addition, the cost of purchasing VMWare Fusion will be completely offset by rebates that were offered with the purchase of a laptop. So once the rebates are paid I'm saving $30 on a new laptop versus buying a refurb, plus another $70 for Fusion which I was going to need no matter where I bought the machine. That largely covers the RAM upgrade.

How did you get by without paying tax?

I presume you're not from the US?

In the US, if you purchase via the internet or mail order and the store doesn't have a physical presence in the state to which the goods are being delivered, then they are not obligated to collect sales tax (8.75% in the county where I live). In theory, we are supposed to report the value of goods purchased in this way on our annual income tax filing and pay an estimated sales tax at that time, but in practice, no one does this.

I bought a refurbished MBP last April. It arrived in flawless condition, and has been a champ since. It did have a wonky battery, but it was just replaced by Apple, no questions asked.

I would purchase a refurb again.

As some people here have noted, it is sometimes cheaper to buy new than refurbished, so always check the prices both ways. I have bought 2 computers (an iMac and a MB) refurbished, but when I went to buy my wife an iMac a while back, it was actually a few dollars cheaper to get it new from Amazon (no tax and a $75 rebate).

Didn't want to make a new thread, so hopefully I can get my question answered here.

I placed my order for my refurb MBP on Feb. 2, and shipped on the same day.

How long does it take to get delivered? Fedex hasn't updated my tracking information in nearly 2 days, and tomorrow is the estimated delivery, and I don't even know where the package is!

@leftfoot: Apple sent the notice within just a few hours of my order (refurb MBP), and it took Fedex nearly four days to finally pick it up. They were slooooow shipping it all across the country - I'm in New York.

Fedex makes you wait and drool yourself dry before you get it...

I'm in that EXACT same position. I ordered mine on the second, and it took until tuesday for any activity to show up. Right now it says it's in route to Reno. Really all I care is that it gets here by Friday, which is the "estimated" ship date.
Though I will say Fedex is awfully lazy.

Best option...much cheaper with the same reliability...all you miss is the nifty box and if you want on ethat bad they have them on ebay (sadly enough)
