used to keep computers always on (but monitors obviously off at night). when i started paying for my own hydro i definitely either shut everything down or to sleep before bed.
Just a curious question if there are any pros and cons of sleeping your mac pro every night or not.
For me I'd like to keep it running and just turning the monitor off as I feel better about not abusing the internals from the sleeping function.
I will say I have no idea what he is talking about with calling a mac pro a space heater. Mine doesn't get externally hot that I've noticed.
Hmm...Lets put it this way.
Up here in the cold north,I dont need to put on the electric radiotors in the winter to heat up my home office...
The amount of heat the machine generates and circulates around the room is actually ridiculous. After few hours of rendering the room temp rises from +13c´to +18c. Add yourself to the mix and you have a comfy temps..
And in the summer man-thongs rule.

If this is in any way accurate the power consumption when sleeping isn't TOO bad.

Here is one from apple, though it only reports idle and max, not sleeping.
I would be curious to know an accurate reading of sleep power consumption.
Wow that's bad. I thought the power consumption on sleep was better than that. My 52" flatscreen only uses 1/4 of a watt (the manual says) on standby. 115 watts idle for Mac Pro. Wow.

For those interested in power usage when sleeping (at least according to apple's report), here it is:

And, yes, sleep and idle are very different.

I guess the heat dissipated from our MP's would largely depends on what's inside, if it's a stock system, it'll remain pretty cool. However, throwing six hard-drives and a couple of video cards and make the machine run with 70~80% load for about eight hours and you've got yourself a space heater! Seriously, it's enough to keep my little studio at a steady 26°C, sure does beat being cold!
Well it's certainly not stock in there but I definitely don't use it at even close to full-capacity very often. 80% of the time it is way more muscle than I need but I love having it for that 20% of the time. I <3 that machine, even if it is possibly possessed.![]()
