used to keep computers always on (but monitors obviously off at night). when i started paying for my own hydro i definitely either shut everything down or to sleep before bed.

Just a curious question if there are any pros and cons of sleeping your mac pro every night or not.

For me I'd like to keep it running and just turning the monitor off as I feel better about not abusing the internals from the sleeping function.

You might want to factor this possibility into your choice:

Probably very rare. I certainly never witnessed it. But it
doesn't hurt to turn off the machine and disconnect the
power as a precaution.

I will say I have no idea what he is talking about with calling a mac pro a space heater. Mine doesn't get externally hot that I've noticed.

Hmm...Lets put it this way.

Up here in the cold north,I dont need to put on the electric radiotors in the winter to heat up my home office...
The amount of heat the machine generates and circulates around the room is actually ridiculous. After few hours of rendering the room temp rises from +13c´to +18c. Add yourself to the mix and you have a comfy temps..

And in the summer man-thongs rule.

I had a giggle at that last sentence but my MP doesn't heat up nearly that much, but maybe I'm not working it hard enough. Must remedy that, pronto!

*starts ripping DVDs and rendering big shyte*

i turn mine off at night, and it sleeps when it can, don't like leaving things on when they may get up to no good.

Remember working in a small room full of G5 power macs at college. Always very hot, good in winter, horrble in summer, it was like sitting next to a open fire.

I usually shut mine down every night. But not because of any heat or noise. Mine is super quiet and never noticed any heat.

The thing's not made of sugar. A Mac Pro is a workstation, which by its very definition implies that it was built to run 365/24. If it can't handle that, it's not worth the money.

However, since energy costs are prohibitive in Germany, I switch my Mac Pro off over night when I don't have any work for it - no sleep mode, no hibernation, a complete shut down.

If this is in any way accurate the power consumption when sleeping isn't TOO bad.

Here is one from apple, though it only reports idle and max, not sleeping.

I would be curious to know an accurate reading of sleep power consumption.

Wow that's bad. I thought the power consumption on sleep was better than that. My 52" flatscreen only uses 1/4 of a watt (the manual says) on standby. 115 watts idle for Mac Pro. Wow.

I don't think standby and idle are the same for a computer. Idle in this case probably refers to if you just started the computer with its default programs running (like Finder etc...). Standby would be more like sleep. Mine on sleep uses <1W (used a kill-a-watt meter)

forgot to mention, I let my MP sleep at night with the monitor on standby. Both generate a lot of heat otherwise (ambient temps around 32 deg C)

I put my Power mac to sleep last night for the first time and turned off the monitor and I liked having to hit a key and coming right on,I may sleep it more often.

I turn mine off without fail. It wastes electricity otherwise. The less electricity that you use, the lower your bill will be. What's the point of leaving it on if you're not using it? Can't you wait two minutes for it to boot up?

Some people need to get familar with the concept of conserving resources. Fossil fuels aren't limitless, you know.

I use my 40" LCD TV as my monitor so that goes off at night but my MP always stays on. I might start turning it off at night because of how much power it consumes at night.

I also need to start turning off my speakers because my Denon receiver sucks alot of juice as well. It is a little space heater but I have not noticed that my Mac Pro gets hot at all

As ssri1983 pointed out: Idle, not sleeping.

For those interested in power usage when sleeping (at least according to apple's report), here it is:

And, yes, sleep and idle are very different.

Oh excellent. Thank you. ~11w (sleeping) I can deal with that. :)

I guess the heat dissipated from our MP's would largely depends on what's inside, if it's a stock system, it'll remain pretty cool. However, throwing six hard-drives and a couple of video cards and make the machine run with 70~80% load for about eight hours and you've got yourself a space heater! Seriously, it's enough to keep my little studio at a steady 26°C, sure does beat being cold!

Well it's certainly not stock in there but I definitely don't use it at even close to full-capacity very often. 80% of the time it is way more muscle than I need but I love having it for that 20% of the time. I <3 that machine, even if it is possibly possessed. :D

I always shutdown at nighttime. I have my MP connected to a USB surge protector that also cuts power to my monitor, USB Hubs, Speakers etc.

Electricity prices are exorbitant here in Spain. Every little helps.
