I just turned mine on for the first time. Usually I have my volume ringer set in the middle at work. I'm just afraid my switch will fall off!

Fall off? I don't think you need to worry. I don't yet have an iPhone 4 but I've been using the switch often on my 3G for over two years and it hasn't gone anywhere.

for times when i don't want my phone to ring... ie. going to the movies, trying to sneak a picture of someone, don't want to answer the phone

Seriously? Yeah man people use them all the time and they won't "fall off" haha. Remember it's a PHONE not a display piece ;)

I toggle mine a dozen times a day (3GS), and have for a year. No issues with it. I had my iPhone 1 for 2 years; never had trouble with its, either.

I always use it when in public. At the movies especially, I leave it on vibrate. If I go to a Broadway show, I turn the phone completely off. One of my nightmares is to think the phone is on vibrate and have it go off during a live show.

I have my ringer set to 1 at work. So as low as it will go without being turned off.

I only use vibrate when I go to the cinema etc.

I use it at least half a dozen times a day. Never a problem. I think the original iPhone had a problem with the switch and was falling off quite a bit. :(

Occasionally. Most of the time I have the ringer on just changing its volume when necessary - love my ringtones!

Why would it fall off?

I rarely use the ringer, only if my phone is in the next room and I'm waiting for a call (like from the mechanic or something). Otherwise it is always on vibrate.

Quite often, that way, if the phone is in my pocket, I feel it ringing.
