Hello, first time here, mine's a 2009 unibody with a 500GB SSD and a 1TB HDD in place of the ODD with 8GB ram, running Mavericks very smoothly... Battery still lasts for 3-4 hours depending on use, everything else is running flawless, and will keep it until it dies on me ;-)

white MacBook 4,1

Hello Forum,
I still love my white MacBook 4,1, though sometimes it doesn't love me as much. Upgraded to 4MB RAM and just replaced dying HDD with SSD (wow, what a change!).

Bulging battery now charging less after 300 cycles and 6 yrs, so time to replace it. Anyone recommend a good after-market source? I've seen comments in the Forum but no links or specific recommendations (perhaps this is verboten?).

Any insights gladly accepted.

I've got mostly the same machine as you (Black 4,1). I recently replaced my battery with one from OWC. It wasn't the cheapest, but it's well built and was one of the only ones I could find in matte black to match my MacBook. For the white one though, the options are a bit wider. Anker has one for a really good price that has generally positive reviews. There's also the Apple battery, at the top end of the price spectrum.

Over all though, I'm happy with my OWC/NuPower battery. I had one in my Late 2008 Unibody as well. It lasts around four hours or so browsing in Chrome and using Office apps. This is on Snow Leopard I should note.

Anyway, on topic. Still using the Early '08 after I left it in a shop over night. Luckily the owner was kind enough to put it behind the counter in the morning and I came and got it. I wouldn't be too happy if I lost it, but it is my secondary machine and it's replaceable. Now my MBP on the other hand would be disaster.

Thought about selling it for a moment, but I just love it's uniqueness so much I don't think I could bring myself to it. Long live Snow Leopard!

I have the Early 2008 White Macbook 2.4Ghz model with 4GB of RAM, and just this weekend I got the Late 2008 Aluminum Macbook 2.0 with 2GB of RAM.

My main computer is now the Aluminum which I plan on upgrading to 8GB of RAM and getting a 1.5TB hard drive.

I think so !!

My white macbook died on me sometime ago. Did they stop producing the white macbooks?

Well .. my experience says so. My old white MacBook (2008) got clinical death (when I power it on, I hear the disc spinning but does not boot, even when I used the original Snow Leopard CD). The dealer in my country told me it's the main board, and advised me to buy a new one, as the cost would be high. I managed to send it with a friend to USA who took it to Apple service. They told him that this model is 5 years old minus 17 days. If he comes after 18 days they would not service it. I don't know what they did exactly but according to my friend (I was on the line), they gave it an electric shock !! and it started to work on the spot , immediately.

Back to your situation; I think Apple does not service the Mac models which are 5 years old. I don't know if other 3rd party service is available or not.
Best wishes

I use 2008 model, 2.1GHz. It is in use daily. This machine has some parts replaced, topcase, dvd drive, charger, hard disk, battery and ram are all from different machines :)

Still using a mid-2009 2.13 GHz MacBook here, with the RAM maxed out to 6 GB and running Mavericks. Almost works like a new Mac! It even edits video on FCP X and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 very well. Now I just have to replace the bad SuperDrive...

Though I may soon get a new Mac Mini for my desktop computer, while keeping the MacBook (I basically got it so I could use the latest Mac operating system!) :D

Macbook:5,1: 13-inch, Aluminium, Late 2008

Standard release: (MB467LL/A)
Macbook 13-inch, Aluminium, Late 2008
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB

Upgrades I have made:
Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
SSD Crucial 256GB

Currently using Mavericks but will upgrade to Yosemite which I believe will be the final release of OSX this model will be able to handle.

I have this hour just installed a second replacement battery for this computer (its third battery in total) as I was getting around one hours worth of battery which meant I had to be a wall-hugger and keep my macbook charged most of the time, not what you want when you have a portable computer.

My sister is in need of a computer and I'd like to give her this one but she naively wants a Windows computer despite having two windows laptops break in the past two years.

I am considering purchasing a new laptop, either the Air or the RPro. Caught between the two at the moment but at the same time thinking I'd like to wait for newer technology to be released. Surely the Air will be re-designed soon and of course new processors will be released by Intel too. But those who wait and wait never buy anything.

Anyone want to recommend some advice whether to stick with the macbook or what to purchase or whether to wait for a new release. Thanks in advance.

I have unibody '08 2.0 GHZ
upgraded RAM to 6GB and HDD to 500GB. Battery and wire charger are not in very good condition. Otherwise, this machine works amazingly well. Its like the first day I got it . Its snappy and fast, and it can run a lot of the pro software. Not sure if buy a new machine I will see a speed difference.

I am going to buy a macbook next year most likely just because its time to change and enjoy newer technology. When are the next BIG macbook change?

Isn't it time Apple releases a new design?

I had the exact same model you have, plus the same upgrades (8GB, SSD) and just upgraded to a 13" rMBP. The differences are quite noticeable, especially when using an external monitor and most any app. For web browsing, iTunes, Mail, etc the difference won't be much. But if you use apps like Aperture, Adobe CS/CC, Parallels, etc the difference is huge!

Not to mention the weight, display, cool running, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, HDMI out, and others. It's a massive upgrade.

I was stuck between the Air and this for a few months. But for the price difference when going with 8GB/256GB the rMBP was only a bit more $$$ for a lot more :apple:

Plus the Air hasn't seen a big redesign since 2010, and the rMBP is brand new.

I'd pull the trigger on a new rMBP and sell the current model or gift it as you said. I was going to wait on Broadwell, but figured the differences shouldn't be super major this year as it was last year.

Late 09 with 8GB ram running Mavericks great. Love the beautiful white design.

My white MacBook 2009 has been upgraded to 8Gbyte of Ram and a Samsung EVO 840 SSD 250Gbyte. Its still going strong, makes light work of Mavericks, plays music and Videos like the day it was new. I'll Keep on using it until I smell burning:cool:

How many people still using MacBook (any model)?

I bought a used mid 2007 white Macbook a few months ago that is now my main computer; only paid $220 for it. It has a 60 gb ssd in it and 2 gb of ram that I will upgrade to 4 soon. I'm running Lion on it. I also need a new battery since this one has over 1,100 cycles on it. I'll be getting a MacBook Air in September though so I can't wait for that!

I'm typing on the mid-2010 white macbook I just bought. My old, very crappy laptop is on the verge of dying and I've always liked the white macbooks. I wanted to get one last computer purchase, but I found myself with a dead machine (cat knocked soda onto keyboard) and limited funds to get a new one if I bought a replacement ASAP. I'd always been nervous about buying a computer on ebay but watched trends for a couple of weeks and then got this one from a reputable seller for a good price. It runs very well and I'm going to order some RAM and a SSD for it. With the cost of upgrade it'll still be much cheaper than buying a comparable laptop new (either mac or PC).

Can some one recommend a place to get a macbook battery ? I was told Apple does not make them any more and all the ones in the market are 3rd party. Who should I trust?

Specifically I looking for late '08 Core2Duo 2.0 . I believe the model is A1278
