Sold my 3 once I got my Mini. Rather than a retina Mini I would like to get an iPad 5 assuming its got the smaller sides and is much thinner and lighter than the 4.

Not saying I don't LOVE my Mini, but I am missing a larger screen for watching movies, TV, etc.

I would upgrade the iPad 1 to a 5. Then I would have a 3 and a 5. The 1 is becoming very unmanageable and slow. Good thing it's not my primary iPad.

I really love my iPad 4...and have resisted buying the Mini due to processor sluggishness & lack of retina display, both of which Apple should be ashamed of themselves for releasing the current Mini with/without. I'll keep my 4 for general home functions, but give me at least a faster processor & retina display...and I'll be an instant buyer!!

I tend to upgrade every two years. I bought the original iPad, and have an iPad 3 now......so, I'll probably just wait another year. The iPad 3 works great for me, and I use it all of the time for both work and home.

I don't really care how many updates Apple does in a given year, since the technology is just going to advance anyway, and I'll buy on my cycle not their cycle.

I should say that, when I do update, it would be great if the iPad was lighter. I really don't care about thinness, since it is already pretty thin....in fact, my case adds thickness, which makes the iPad easier for me to hold. However, less wieght would be great!

I think gen 6 will really hit the sweet spot.
Gen 5 will most likely add the thinner, lighter form factor.
The Gen 6 will update the chip.

I will be tempted to swap the 3 for the 5- but I might try to wait.

I have an iPad 2 (32GB/3G) Works perfectly. If the next version can do things that my current iPad can't, then I'd consider it.

I should add that retina is not a major selling point for me. While it's nice (also own an iPod Touch 5), I can't justify spending another $730+ to replace my current 2 just for a retina screen.

iPad 3, 32GB-LTE refurbs are now only $549. you get a Retina screen and LTE over your iPad 2 3G

I'm very happy with my 3gen and can't see it offering anything that would actually improve my workflow.

I will get a mini if it comes with retina. Not interested in the current mini due to screen/ specs.

Didn't check any of the options because none applied. I have an iPad 3 that's just a year old. It's my first iPad & I'm still very satisfied with it.

I usually buy every other generation in electronics. But, Apple released the iPad 4 just months after the iPad 3. So, I've decided not to count it. :D

If the iPad 5 included major innovations, I could change my mind. But, I doubt that the next generation iPad will be a big jump forward.

Going to wait for it to be unveiled before I decide whether or not to trade in my 3. I don't even know what the difference is yet!

I think gen 5 will update the chip. I doubt it will have A6X again unless they really do release it before summer which is unlikely in my opinion.

Looks like many people are upgrading. When is the best time to sell your old device before a launch? Is it when the keynote invites go out?

The question posed was upgrading one's current iPad to the next one - not a 3. Five mabye?

Regardless, have no interest in a three. Retina's not really important to me and I use the 3G only intermittently. LOL, it was less than a year ago that AT&T made 3G available in my area - LTE not here yet.

Living in a rural area has both benefits - and drawbacks. :)

Got a iPad 4 in December and do not use it. Am actually going to try and trade it for a MBP or MBA. Thought it would help me with web design work. But I would not upgrade as the 4 works excellent, so why?

haha my bad. yeah LTE hasn't blanketed the US yet. however by 2015 Verizon will have LTE on every tower that's broadcasting 3G. AT&T is way far behind.

if you haven't used a Retina screen, don't. once you go Retina you never go back. trust me. it's impossible. even real life isn't as beautiful in comparison (don't tell my girlfriend that!)

Can't see upgrading within the next year. Went from the 1 to the 3. Bought the high end cellular model so hopefully would be usable for 3 years.

Of course, if something REALLY good appeared before 3 years was up, I would be open. Or if something happened like loss or breakage of mine out of warranty.

I've got an iPad 3 and was only slightly miffed when the iPad 4 came out in December. I'm planning on skipping the next iteration unless it has a KILLER spec. New camera, bump in processor/GPU speed wouldn't cut it. I had an iPad 1 and the retina screen of the iPad 3 sold it to me.

So my answer is "no", unless it's very, very shiny

I don't have an iPad 4 at the moment but if I did, no, I wouldn't upgrade. Knowing what I know so far though, I would buy it.

Rocking an iPad 3 on iOS 5.1.1 and will untill iOS 9 comes out! :)

same! i'm not upgrading to iOS 6 - no way jose

a lot of my jailbreak apps aren't compatible with iOS 6 so i'm sticking to my guns and staying with iOS 5.1.1

I have a retina screen on my IPT5. :) Yeah, there's a difference - but not enough to make me give up my iPad 2. Yet.

LOL - hope your girlfriend isn't reading this board! :D

BTW, my iPad is on 5.1.1 too! No JB, but I do prefer Google Maps and YouTube in their current versions.

I have the original iPad but I use it only occasionally and for simple, non-processor-intensive activities, so I won't upgrade for quite some time. That being said, your poll doesn't have an option for "No, I'm happy with my earlier-generation iPad," so I can't answer.

Retinas good but real life looks better.
