I've had my mobile number since the 90s. I've never changed my mobile number.

I've changed mine like 4 or 5 times in the past ~18 years.

In the small European country I reside, carriers make bank by selling "VIP" phone numbers to their customers. For example, you can get a phone number where most, or in some extreme cases, all of the digits are identical, except for the first one, e.g. 0111111111. It's one of the reasons people change their numbers here more often, beside all the obvious ones.

When I moved away from a city a few years ago, I changed my number to the local area code where I moved. I didn't want anyone knowing I was from there! lol.

Just once.

I had a Nokia 6130 (or similar) on Cellular 2000 during my first years at college. Sometime shortly after graduating, I purchased a Nokia 6810 -- nice design for SMS back then -- on Cingular. I didn't have a problem with a new number because, at that point, it was simply informing immediate family of the change.

Nowadays, switching a mobile phone number would be a huge hassle for most, including myself.

I have only changed my number once since my first cellphone in 2000, and, the only reason I changed was to get a local number after I moved because back then, cheaper plans did not include roaming/long distance, etc. :)

Too often according to my family and friends, even though it’s been like 2 years now! Every time I get a new carrier I take a new number. Too lazy to wait for the handover. Also it costs like 30 bucks to do so

Was forced to change coz of AT&T who couldnt even properly process a carrier switch/ trade-in without screwing up.

Very cool question! Geez I got my first phone in say 98-99ish? Same # since. Pretty wild to think about it. Thats a long time! lol

I’ve had the same number since I was 18 and I’m currently in my early 30s now. Won’t ever change my number. No reason to

My first phone was a bag phone by Motorola(?) First small portable cellphone was a Nokia through Cingular which merged with AT&T. None of them had great phone service in my area. But porting your number was not possible as each cellphone company had their own phone numbers which actually allowed you to identify who their carrier was. So I had three different numbers due to carrier changes up until I went with Nextel.

My current number came from Nextel which was the first company to actually offer decent coverage in my area. Nextel got bought by Sprint. And now Sprint is with T-Mobile. So I have had the same number, which came from a bank of numbers Nextel distributed, since 2002.

I am very thankful cellphone companies now all allow for number porting!

My parents had "car phones" during the '90s, which might be the same as you're referring to. They had travel bags to move them from vehicle to vehicle, connecting to the cigarette lighter port and optionally a window mounted external antenna. For a couple years, one of them upgraded to a "brick" phone.

I’ve changed my number probably 4-5 times. I’ve had my current number for about 5 years now. For me the only reason that I change my number is because I’ve moved and I felt it looked better on resumes to have a local number. Although I’m not sure that matters anymore so I’ll probably never change my number again.

In my country, it’s common for people to change their numbers constantly, some even on a monthly basis, depending on what deals the carriers are offering at that time. Majority of people are in prepaid plans, and carriers keeps offering deals for new numbers, so it encourages people to do what they did.

I used to change my numbers until I got bored and decided to just stick with a single post paid number. But I’m in the minority. :)

Only once in the last 20 years or so. But there is no sense in doing it these days. Most numbers available today are old discarded numbers and you are taking your chances at getting a crappy number.

I've had the same number since my friend Alex G. Bell first hooked me up. :)

Seriously though, I think I had "mobile" phones since the early 90s. First a car phone, then some Nokia phone while in College. I think when I finally got a Nextel flip phone I was issued my current number ~1999 or early 2000. Number porting became a thing for mobile numbers in ~ 2003 I think, so I was always able to keep my number with me till the current day.

I've had other "throwaway" numbers I use for data only devices, which I don't even remember. I had a visible line for data usage alongside my FI primary line earlier this year. I got tons of spam calls/texts there as well. I now deal with Spam calls/Texts with a text filter app + "silence unknown callers" enabled in my settings.

Never? When spam calls started increasing, I thought I was the only one getting a lot of robo calls. I ended up changing my number only to realize the rest of the world was also getting a bunch of robo calls.
