For what? (Seriously, I'm curious as to why people still need these [or think they do])

The ODD, (in my experience), is by far the least reliable piece of hardware in the machine.

Takes up a HUGE amount of space too.

Time to ditch the deadwood as far as I'm concerned.

Edit: To the OP, I ditched the ODD in my 13" MBP a looooong time ago and stuck in an Intel X2 160GB SSD. Best decision I've made in regards to enhancing my computing experience.

For the most part, I'm burn DVDs of product or configurations for customers. I'm a sales engineer for a software company.

I use the drives in all of my Mac computers that are equipped with superdrives, and I have an external BD for my MBAs. I could cope without an internal superdrive, though but would probably miss not having an internal drive.

I think it has something to do with real estate. It's probably the least use feature that takes up the a big chunk of space.

Guess I'm the only one who enjoys watching DVDs on my MacBook Pro (without an external drive of course). It's almost to the point of compulsion that a lot of people here are scratching at the walls screaming "Get it out, get it out!" Why does it bother people that a feature is present? I don't use the ethernet port, card slot, kensington lock slot, FireWire, or Thunderbolt, but I'm not flipping out over the fact that they are there. I know some people use them. Weight and thinness isn't really an issue, and if a few ounces are that important perhaps said person should opt to buy a MacBook Air.

It bothers people because it takes up A LOT OF SPACE. Space is limited. Space is precious.

Bigger battery, extra HDD/SDDs, Dedicated Graphics all being cut to accommodate 90's tech.

Why haven't you ripped your DVDs? You could still watch them on your computer. [For longer if you had a bigger battery!;)]

How big are the file sizes?

#1, You can remove the drive and have more "precious space". Why not leave the option for people who use it? Is it harming you that it is available? As far as making space for a battery, I already addressed that in a previous comment. I believe Apple should look into creating an additional battery that would fit into the optical drive's slot for those who wish to remove it and have more battery. You wouldn't be getting extra space anyway if they did this. You don't really think they are keeping the same form factor and eliminating the OD do you? If Apple did do away with the optical drive and adopted the Air's form factor (which I believe they will be doing anyway), you can kiss a longer-lasting battery and option to upgrade yourself goodbye.

Physical keyboards, HDs, batteries, and trackpads are way prior to 90s tech and they still make room for those :)

This would be viable except how, exactly, am I supposed to store all of those files locally? I use a fairly small SSD. I'm not about to invest in some monster external drive (or internal, for that matter) either. It's also a royal pain in the ass for someone who's invested in a large collection over the years.

I use it almost every day because a lot of what I do involves using DVDs, and since I'm always going places where I'll need it, an external drive is not practical at all.

Because most people don't, regularly, like they would other features. Why cater to a shrinking minority of ODD users?

I am worried about the potential loss of upgrade options too, ala Air.

Physical keyboards and trackpad are on the way out too once capacitive technology gets better. Batteries of today are nothing like the batteries of old.

Wouldnt it be great to have extra storage. Oh wait, you've got a monster ODD eating up that valuable space where one might go:rolleyes:

See Bold answers.

Apple drives are all crippled with riplock. They are also loud, slow, and prone to breaking down. I use an external blu-ray burner whenever I need optical media. The drive is USB powered and the size of two discs in cases, so if I ever needed to use it away from the desk it would be no problem to travel with.

The space currently taken up by the internal ODD could be used for a 50% larger battery, more space on the logic board enabling things like more USB ports, or space for two more 2.5" drives. I'd love to have USB ports on both sides with a larger battery and second 2.5" drive bay.

So based on the votes so far it's safe to say that over 80% of customers who have a MBP could do away with the optical drive. i think Apple knows this very well and now i am more convinced then ever that they will remove the optical drive in the next revision of the MBP.

Previous MBP, total of maybe 8-10 times over the course of almost 4 years.

This MBP. Not even once.

Complete waste of space and potential. Will likely be going for the Optibay solution as soon as I return stateside.

I use my superdrive daily. I would miss it because most of my family use cd/dvd's media. Just not convenient for me to not to have it yet inside my MBP. I wish I didn't need it but one day not just yet.

I haven't had my mbp for a month yet, but having the superdrive in it isn't a deal killer for me. I purchased a toshiba netbook (for sale now) and it didn't have a drive so I bought an external. I don't figure I'll use it much, but it's nice to know it's there if I need it.

If it wasn't there, I probably wouldn't miss it too much...till it was time to load software I didn't get wirelessly.

space consuming?

I think it is way to expensive. Just get a black one for $20 somewhere else.

I use it weekly to make lossless rips of CDs.
Because MP3s suck.

I see 50%, not 80%.
All MBPs have an SD card slot, which we all use every now and then, but Apple doesn't remove it. So I count both "daily and weekly" and "every now and then" as people who would appreciate having the ODD.

Removed it to fit a second hard drive. I have it in an external USB case, but have never used it. All backups and exports these days are external hard drives, USB keys or cloud.

On my current Macbook I use it on a regular basis to watch DVDs while packaging stuff to send out or rip CDs at relatives houses or ones from the library.
On the 15 inch MBP I'll snag in the summer I'll remove the ODD and replace it with a SSD bootdisk but I'll keep the ODD in one of those neato enclosures and bring it around everywhere with me.

i don't think the issue is whether people use it, but whether they would be ok if it were an external option.

that would be great for me, i almost never need it.
but i understand people still watching dvds, or listening to cps may not want the drive removed...

I do not need it very often, but when I need it, I need very much!
