I traded my (at the time) nearly $3,000 MacBook Pro i7 2.9GHz 15" (Mid 2017) 512GB SSD for the base $900 M1 Air w/ education discount. I got a $850 trade-in value so I only paid $49 + tax! Insane this little laptop will perform as good, if not better at 1/3 the cost and size.

Just curious if anyone is having issues with trading in devices? I received my M1 MacBook Air on 12/17, but didn't receive the trade-in kit till 12/24 to trade-in my old MacBook Air. I dropped it off at on 12/28, but didn't get delivered till Jan 5th. Apple send me an email saying it's been over 2 weeks so they can't guarantee the value. It says I can track the status, and when I do that it says my trade-in was cancelled because it was more than 14 days. It has been less than 14 days since I received the kit. WTF. I try chatting with Apple and they say to call Phobio, the trade-in, company because there isn't anything they can do. Ugh.

It sounds like their trade-in system wasn’t designed with current USPS delays taken into consideration. I’d call Apple back and warn them that you are going to return the MBA and see if that gets a response. Probably not but I’m not sure what else you can do.

Just to add some more detail, Phobio didn't even ship the trade-in kit till 12/17, which is the day I received the MacBook Air from apple. So it was another week before I received the kit. Even if I had shipped it the day I got it, it would still have been more than 14 days to them receiving it. They use ground shipping, so from West coast to Texas is pretty typically a week.

Log into Phobio to get the status and use the Live Chat feature (showing right below the log in) to ask for an extension because of delayed shipping. Phobio is able to see when you received the box and when you shipped it.

I contacted Apple again. This person was just as clueless. They also told me to contact phobia even though I have no confirmation number with Phobio to look up my trade. I then contacted Phobio and they said the trade-in will show as cancelled until they mark it as received, which may take a couple days. It's been over 2 days. After reading some of the complaints on reddit, I am wishing I just sold it myself.

Also busy selling my MacBook 16” base, after purchasing the MBA M1.

So sad though, when i was giving the 16” a once over, there isn’t a scratch on it, such a gorgeous machine.

Only difference in my workflow is no fans coming on while typing an email. I don’t use a laptop as a laptop much, but i most certainly on occasion, need a mobile option. So i never got to appreciate the speakers and the screen as much as i would have wanted too.

First time i have rotated a machine this quickly, usually every 3-4 years. Rather going to get what i can for it now price wise, and have someone still appreciate it fully.

Then the MBAM1 is tester and filler to see what next year brings. Or maybe not, so far so good for me on the switch.
Could you please share price?

The 16 inch MacBook Pro lost a significant amount of it's resale value when the M1 was released. And that was without it's direct successor! Imagine how much lower prices will sink when the M1 16 inch is finally released. With that being said, I decided that now was the time to sell my 16 Inch before I took a damaging loss. As much as I loved the performance of my 16 Inch, I did not love the size and weight, or the heat. Plus, it had a dead pixel and a little bit of light bleed, so I won't be missing that. It was inconvenient to use when it was not on a desk. That's where the 13 Inch Pro really shines. I can actually use it on my lap for a long periods of time without fatigue, or my legs sweating. I decided to buy the cheapest base model just to get a feel of it. I do need a little bit more ram and a sightly bigger screen so I will return it at the end of my 90 days and use my iPad Pro until the 14 inch is released. I know one thing for sure, I will not be going back to Intel ever again!

I'm sorry you're having this experience. More often than not here in the MR forums, dealing with Phobio has been problematic for members. They're not Apple; they're only a third-party partner. It should be a better experience, but for many it's not.

For my own trades, I won't do a mail-in trade with them. The trade-in sites most often cited here on MR are MacMeAnOffer.com and CashForYourMac.com. I've done two trades this past year with CFYM and had two excellent experiences. To sell outright, Swappa.com seems to be the one mentioned most often. I've had good experiences in the past with Best Buy trade-ins, but haven't done one there in a couple of years.

I sold my high end base model for 67 % of new price (bought for NOK 34k, sold for 23k)
Felt a bit sad but after gaming with my MBA on my lap without issues, which was impossible on the old one, I do not regret it.

Sold a MBP 2019 that I had just padded up with an Applecare warranty on the last day of the default warranty expiry.
No trade-in for laptops at least for Apple India - only for phones

Even though it was the shortest lived Apple product I have brought in a long time
And by far the worst depreciation wise..
Not to mention its is technically a downgrade (MBA for a MBP) .

yet, yet - this is the first apple upgrade (or any tech product upgrade rather) in a very long time that has actually made me well & truly happy about the decision..
Hell, it has been 2 weeks+ now- yet I am here on macrumors trying to convince strangers on the Interwebs that this is well & truly a great buy ! 🤣

Did not do it. By the time the model I am interested in becomes available, the 16” is about to be released. So I might as well now wait for the 16” version.

I can do, i am based in South Africa, so i am doing simple currency conversions and they include tax.

i was fortunate to purchase pre COVID, and the prices skyrocketed locally, so i managed to score a bit on that fact:

initial purchase price in dollars was around 2600 dollars new (Base i7)by end of 2020 the new price was 3400 dollars (currency conversion)

sold it for 2350 Dollars as a trade in at a shop that does apple products.

Just returned my M1 Mac mini & went back to my late-2015 5k iMac. I’ll wait for the Apple Silicon iMac or Mac Pro mini. My worst experience with any Apple device

I upgraded from my 2018 8/256 MBA to the new base M1 MBA.

Bought the new one at 10 % off and got an additional $100 off with an old iPhone 4 trade in. The local store had a very worthwhile Black Friday offer, essentially taking $250 off on a brand new order.

Sold my old MBA for $890, so the upgrade ended up costing me $130 all in all. (I’m not in the US if you’re wondering why pricing doesn’t add up).

Probably the best upgrade I’ve ever done. What can I say, the M1 MBA is my favourite Mac of all time! Apple have really pulled off some sorcery here with the M1 chip.

Going to wait at least the rumored 14” pro appears. My MBP works fine, though ram certainly looks like the future.

Update: My trade-in now shows that it is being inspected, after saying before that it was cancelled. This is consistent with what the Phobio rep told me. Waiting to find out now if I will actually get the original value that was given when I purchased my M1 MBA when I ordered it on Dec 1.

FWIW - had a good experience selling my i5 2020 Air to CashForYourMac.com in early December.

They communicated well, advising me of when my shipment arrived and when they'd completed the inspection. I promptly received a check for the original offer.

Ordered the new M1 Air within an hour of the announcement. Once I'd gotten it and made sure everything was OK, I looked at what to do with my "old" Mac, a 2019 13" MBP (1.4GHz, 16BG RAM, 1TB SSD, 2 Thunderbolt ports).

Once it became clear that no-one in the immediate family needed it, I put it up for sale at the main classifieds site in Norway, Finn.no, setting a moderate price: 50% of what I gave 15-16 months earlier.

It was a price I was entirely happy with, and - apparently - at least one buyer, too. It was sold and shipped within a day of its listing. :)
