I'm stupid because I don't think a person should own an iPhone if they can't afford a decent data plan?

Exactly. It's a subjective matter. There isn't a "good" or "bad" data plan per se. It's whatever fits your needs. So that's why regardless of what you have there's a chance of you going over (unless it's unlimited).
