That is what I'm hoping to get out of my AW3 GPS Only. At least 2 years with the goal and hope for 3.



My AW3 ends the day, with an exercise at 80%-87% depending on how much I use it (if I don't exercise, 90-95%). So, with that math, 20% a day... it would take 5 days to use a "cycle" - so 1000 cycles * 5 days = 5000 days. That's 13 years. OK let's say we program some "error" and say most people will use 40% a day - 2 days for a cycle = 2000 days = 5.47 years till the battery hits 80% of design capacity. That's pretty good.

What a math-y analysis. Based on that, I doubt I would be able to use my current one for more than 2 years. I recharge once or twice per two days. Sometimes a bit more because I need to sync music.

My SS Series 0 had a hairline crack which let water in to the screen. Still works, but there’s a big blotch of dead pixels. Didn’t plan on updating until next year, but so far I’m loving my SS Series 3. I foresee it lasting many more years than my S0 barring any accidents.

My Only complaint about the first generation Apple Watch is if they would have made it somewhat faster or more powerful with the processor. I think the processor in the Series one should have been what's in the first generation Apple Watch, and now the Series 3 has the faster dual core processor and makes everything much more fluid.

I'm happy to take a performance hit with iOS updates until it's unbearable, then I'll pay to upgrade the device. Getting hacked would amount to thousands of dollars of damage + heavy amounts of stress, so a few hundred dollars every other year more than pays for itself if it lessens the chance of that occuring.

Of course, some people might not value their privacy, identity, personal files, private messages, email accounts, or credit cards. In which case there's no harm in sticking with an older iOS.

The Apple Watch will last as long as you want it to. This would require not updating the OS every time a new version is pushed (the features might be good, but the performance will be bad), also don't update your phone OS for it is inevitable that the version on your watch and the version on your phone will become incompatible. Finally you'd need to get the battery replaced when needed.

Security is a good point, but not updating is also going to mean giving up any new features that are introduced. If you don't care, that's fine, but lots of people find the upgraded features and functions valuable. Would you really feel like you were happy with a Series 0 or Series 1 AW? Performance is meaningless if the features are limited.

Although you make some valid points, reading through these forums and even those outside a tech forum apparently don't care or want to care about upgrading to iOS 11. I think you have those who would rather risk performance versus security and are just plain ignorant that they don't want to acknowledge what could potentially happen by not updating. I'm also inclined to believe there are large majority have no idea what Spectre and meltdown even are.

My first one lasted 2,5 years. I recently renewed my S0 and it was close to die.

Battery was running out every day around 9pm, worse if I did some exercise, in this case it run out at 4 or 5pm. I had to install a charger at the office.

Also it was very slow.

And it started having like a problem around the screen, it started appearing like a red “frame” all around the screen. Anyway I have gifted it to my brother in law and he is still using it. But for my day by day usage it was not good.

So that’s my bet, 2-3 years 🙂

Yes, I agree with you.

First gen, even in the beginning, ended the day with 25-30% of battery, and this one is strange if it doesn't ends with 55-60% so I hope this model will suffer less with the battery in the long run. We will see, I'll post here in two years and a half and tell you 🙂

This is the data from my S0 42mm BSB Watch. I’ve had it since June 2015 and it’s been charged every day overnight and a few times it’s been left on the charger for a week when I’ve been away working.

Although the design capacity was 250mah it’s still running at 300mah. The watches don’t get the same drain like a phone. I use mine for at least an hour workout most days too.

‘Worth’ would be how long you plan on keeping the Apple Watch first generation for. And then ask yourself when do you plan on upgrading next? If you plan on upgrading relatively soon or within the next year, then I don’t think I would invest the $79 to replace the battery.

Not for me, I have already replaced it with a S3 LTE and I’m very happy. This new one is faster and the battery is much more powerful.

I have to say anyway that yesterday I ended with 16% only! I went to run for 1:25 with a chest strap and later I walked 17km more so I was all the day moving. Usually I end the day with 50-60% of the battery still remaining on the watch.

I changed it also because I swim three days a week and run another three so gps and swimming abilities were important for me. If in your case the S0 is enough, I’ll worth to replace the battery. It’s a very personal and subjective decision 🙂

With one hour workout at lunch time, it dies around 4pm.

I didn’t measure the battery using any app, but I can tell you that my battery is not in good condition 🙂 my purchase date was same, June 2015, launching date here in Spain.

I took it in to the Apple Store, hoping to be able to replace the battery, but I was told that it passed the battery test (meaning, I guess, that it has something like 80% of its barely adequate original capacity) so I couldn’t get the battery changed out. I was advised to turn off all the features for which I bought it, and it would then last through the day. So as soon as I work up the energy, it will be on eBay.

I don’t think you can. I just think the person you quoted is comparing their battery life now versus when they first got it and assuming that life has gone down. The battery app Battery Life by RBT can tell you the capacity but not cycles.

And yeah Apple has refused to replace batteries for me too unless they’re under 80% or designed capacity.

That’s one thing I don’t agree with Apple about regarding the replacing the battery for the Apple Watch. I think a user should be able to pay out-of-pocket if they want to replace the battery. And the reason being is, Apple can’t identify every issue possible issue the Apple Watch if something is affecting the battery. Not to mention, they charge $79 for a battery replacement if it’s out of warranty and I would think Apple would want to make money off something like that.
