If they wanted to be paying you what you're worth, they would already be doing so. Leaving is not really going to be too damaging considering the economy as it is. For everyone complaining they don't earn enough and threatening to leave, there's another 50 people knocking at the door who would just be grateful to have a job right now. The power is with employers at the moment.

I've been told I will most likely get what I'm asking for by the person I directly report to.

That being said, I was in the same situation as you last year, and I gave my company till the end of last year to fix it, and they chose to let me go. I got a new job with a 35% rise on what I was on. My old job is still advertised today, three months later, and this week the closing date for applications got extended again. Guess I wasn't as replaceable as they told me I was when I walked out the door

Not to brag, but for the second year in a row, I've been called the best at what I do in the company. And I would never threaten to leave, there's no point. I would just show up one day with my resignation letter and move on.

Am I replaceable? Probably. But they would not have an easy time trying.

Enough, yet not enough. I'd love to have many dollars to travel more. Ah well, life.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you :)
being told what you're getting is a little different to getting it. I never threatened either. I told them I wanted progression by year end, no ultimatum. I didn't get it so handed in my notice. With over 10 years experience at the company I was one of the most experienced and better analysts but in times like this they were willing to risk replacing me easilly. Didn't work out too great...

I make a negative income.

Somewhere in the region of -£7500 a year for the next 5 years. Fun times :)

I hear ya. I've been here over ten years as well. Kind words are nice, but they aren't making my 401K any bigger.

My suggestion: tell everyone where where you've hidden the office supplies. They'll find out sooner or later anyway.

Whatever, dude.

Because of my job the wage can vary dramatically; some months you bring home nothing, some you bring home thousands. I don't like the inconsistencies so I'm planning on changing careers.

I got my first regular job, aged 38, a year and a half ago. Over those 36 months I've gently and incrementally nudged my salary up from low to average for my profession, location, education and experience. So I cannot complain anymore (of course I still do, but that's more of duty as an employee and not really from need, see below).

After 20 years as a freelancer, student and - again - freelancer, with a spending pattern to fit low and sporadic income, combined with selling our house last year and now renting a very affordable flat from family, I've yet to figure out how to spend it all. I'm actually still baffled by the fact that a quite huge amount of money is deposited to my bank account every month. Amazing! :p

I imagine many people in a variety of income brackets think the same.

Viewpoint agreement. It's funny also how depending on how much you bring home, the "needs" list lengthens as opposed to the "wants" list. I read on CNN.com last week some housemom whining that now she lost her second job, the family has - get this - gotten used to mixing different types of pasta in the same batch. My heart truly goes out to people like this

Then there's folks like us that already do stuff like this and in many ways are more content; We have less, but our needs are subsequently less also.

It's all in the mind. If you have the basics (food, clothing, shelter) the rest is perceived. Not sayin' it's not nice to have, tho' ;)

I valet park at Hooters. I usually bring in $40-50 on a good night. More if there's a NASCAR race on, or the porn convention is in town. I cleared $20K last year. It's not a lot of money, but it keeps the wife beaters clean and the mullet looking good.

Hey now. Leave Hooters out of this. They have amazingly good looking tasting chicken breasts wings.
