I architect the network boundaries for large corporates

"architect" is not a verb. ;)

I've noticed that the term has been appropriated by the computer industry. I have a sneaking suspicion that it started with a guy I went to grad school with, who formed his own IT company and became very successful. He even has a building named after him at our alma mater. He was a CS major, in a double major program in the business school, along with lots of "real" architecture majors.

I make less than him. ;)

Thanks for those who have entered into the spirit! I agree - not talking about earnings just allows employers to get away with paying wildly different amounts.

As to the anonymity - surely most people's MacRumors presence is anonymous. I don't think I've ever seen anyone disclose their name and address nor include a photo of themselves.

Certainly, I personally ensure I stay anonymous on here.

OP if you feel the need and want to have a greater sense of anonymity, then request a mod to put a poll on you first post. People who wish can then select the amount they earn within set groups.

Then you haven't taken a very good look around, have you? Not only are there many pictures of members on here, there are also local meetups occasionally, members meet each other for product launches (see the iPad forum) and many have established lasting friendships that extend to the real world. There are even couples who have met on macrumors.

This place isn't just some random Internet forum for a lot of members. It's become and online community that has extends far beyond an anonymous screenname.

With that in mind I will say only that I make enough to be comfortable and not have money as a reason to stress out.

i make 1 million dollars just for surfing the web. To learn how, just buy my "secrets to surfing the web" kit for the low price of $100!

No one discusses their pay because employers like it that way. Two or more people in the same position and doing the same work are often paid very different amounts for no good reason. If they all knew how much each other was making, then the company would have to justify why some are getting paid more--which is the way it should be IMO. Therefore, its "rude" to discuss salary. I'm at $75,600.

This is actually a very accurate statement – discouraging employees from discuss salaries is one way in which employer’s help keep salaries lower.

Just imagine for one second that you have two equally qualified people who have worked at the same company for a year. Lets say Employee A hasn’t been doing well on sales but had a higher salary coming in and Employee B has been hitting all there sales numbers but isn’t getting paid as high as Employee A. All things being equal, you not discussing salary is actually allowing the employer to disproportionately pay A when compared to B, even though A isn’t producing. If B knew A’s salary, a negotiation for a raise would most likely ensue which is going to cost the employer more money or open the company up to a lawsuit.

To that point that is why a policy preventing or discoursing employees from discussing pay is an illegal under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).

More than I used to and hopefully less than I will. But most of my rewards in life are intangible.

Not nearly what I'm worth, so I'm taking it up with my big boss within the month. Either they give me a substantial raise, or I will be moving on in the near future. I got a great review and there's no excuse for them not paying me what I'm worth.

Been talking to some other people about outside opportunities, so I've got a plan if this doesn't work out.

Why not just do that then? They obviously don't respect you if they haven't given you the raise you deserve.

The corporate world is doing this all over right now. You have to make demands or they don't do anything.

I also like my job and the people I work with. Leaving to go for this other opportunity would mean doing something less creative and more on the management side. Money-wise, it would be very good but not very fulfilling. The hours would be just as long too. It's hard to work long hours at a job you feel so-so about.

I don't think this question would show anything about how affluent Apple users are...

Maybe it's my midwest sensibilities, but I think this is a pretty private question. Pretty rude too.

How's this, I'll give you a job title, industry, experience level, and location, and you take a wild guess?

$20,000 a year seems pretty low in my opinion...:D

This is a pretty tacky question and the figures may be largely irrelevant based on cost of living and whether or not you're talking about combined incomes or not. A poll might have brought in more answers.

As I'm sure you can guess, I'm not going to answer specifically. This household brings in enough but sometimes not enough. I imagine many people in a variety of income brackets think the same.

I'm currently a student who makes nothing, and my debt grows daily. That doesn't stop me from buying new computers though. I'll let future me deal with the repercussions.

If they wanted to be paying you what you're worth, they would already be doing so. Leaving is not really going to be too damaging considering the economy as it is. For everyone complaining they don't earn enough and threatening to leave, there's another 50 people knocking at the door who would just be grateful to have a job right now. The power is with employers at the moment.

That being said, I was in the same situation as you last year, and I gave my company till the end of last year to fix it, and they chose to let me go. I got a new job with a 35% rise on what I was on. My old job is still advertised today, three months later, and this week the closing date for applications got extended again. Guess I wasn't as replaceable as they told me I was when I walked out the door

Interesting that even though most people are using aliases (its the internet) people still won't divulge numbers or even a bracket figure
