if i dont get at least 9 hrs of sleep i feel like crap the whole day. im still trying to figure out how to fix this

Change 9 to 8, and that's me.

And to think I used to live on ~6 hours of sleep throughout high school and felt fine.

I think it's "didn't know what I was missing" kind of thing... feeling like crap everyday makes it "normal", and when you start NOT feeling like crap everyday, the day you do feel like crap from insufficient sleep, you know it.

Agree.

Once you get into a good sleep rhythm for your body, it can really make a difference.

When my sleeping habits were at their poorest, I was almost chronically sick. Two bouts of bronchitis, one of pneumonia, three or so sinus infections, thrush, strep throat, the flu probably three or four times. Do you remember if the study specifically mentioned respiratory infections?

As I recall, it was a variety of illnesses. This was a very recently published study -- you can probably google and find it.

When I was younger (I'm 143 now),

I recently did a course with work where they deprived us of sleep to see how we worked under pressure. Basically the course ran 8am - 6pm with not much in the way of breaks for lunch or anything. Then we had to do our planning for the next day overnight.

They would deliberately give us too much work so we have to prioritise what we did and in what order. I would generally work until 2am, then sleep (not too far away) until 5am then back to the preps. This went on for a week.

I found I was Ok, I went to bed when my brain stopped working, as in I became dyslexic and made lots of mistakes, and I set my alarm for three hours after my head touched the pillow.

The night after the course finished we (six of us) went out for a drink (to celebrate passing) and two guys fell asleep in the bar! Went to bed around 10am that night yet still woke up at 6am...

I did sometimes insane things just to feel a thrill. I didn't care. I got sick a lot and seemed to hurt all the time

My experiences were similar. I still have a few scars as well as some permanent damage to one of the knuckles on my left hand (when I was like that, I never went to the doctor when I should have). I'm sure we could swap stories for hours — if we could bear to talk about it.

Oh, i get about 8 hours a night... well I try to. If I get less then that I don't operate right the next day. Usually on the weekends it's about 9 hours.

What really bakes my noodle is wondering if it was just a phase of my life or if I would have done those things anyway if I had been sleeping better. I think I've always had a bit of a thrill-seeking tendency, but the amount of fear I had in those moments was perhaps in direct proportion to the amount of sleep I was or was not getting. Not that it occurred to me or mattered at the time though, of course.

I imagine we could swap a lot of stories. Those are bizarre times.

Around 8-9 hours for myself. Unless I go to sleep before 12 then I usually wake up at 5.
