I agree. I highly doubt that there will be a 6th gen. The 5th gen will continue to be sold however.

As for the idea of "keeping the iPod Touch around as an entry into the Apple ecosystem for kids" if that was ever true, that time has passed... during the downward slide in iPod Touch sales over the past 4 years Apple has done nothing to revitalize sales.

I don't think they will sell a device that isn't capable of running their latest OS. I feel that when the A8 comes out it may get the A6 without any mention.

iPods will definitely stay for a while longer. They will just be stagnant technology and lack development.

Apple will not sell the Touch if it's unable to run the latest IOS. IOS 9 (fall 2015) will need an A7 or better to run and if the Touch hasn't been updated by then with an A7, Apple will stop selling the Touch. It will not remain stagnant technology. It will either be updated or canceled.

Note - I'm now agree with one of the analyst who claimed Apple is doing too much this fall between the iPhone, iPad, and iWatch (whatever they call it) to release a Touch this fall. It looks like if Apple does release the Touch 6, it will be in spring 2015 (the 32/64GB Touch will be moved back to the 16GB Touch 6 date (spring 2015)).

The A5 will run IOS8 but the A5 and A6 will not be supported under IOS9 (64 bit). Apple will either update to the A7 or not change the design.

I'm getting the feeling that the iPod Touch is going to go the way of the Dodo soon. There is hardly a market for a "iPhone with no phone" at this point. Not saying there isn't a niche for the product but Apple isn't going after niche markets these days. They're going for mass sales. Why build, market and sell 1 million iPod Touches when they can just focus on selling 10 million iPhones (these aren't actual figures only hypothetical examples)? iPhones have a higher profit margin and the way that the mobile industry has it laid out it's a win/win situation for every iPhone they sell (either yearly or every 2 years), while an iPod would only be 1 sale until the thing dies... I know plenty of people still rocking the nearly 5 year old iPod Touch 4th gen... I'm actually one of them.

The iPod touch won't be needed if the iWatch includes wifi capabilities. I hope the iWatch can connect to wifi so that you can use it at home without having to carry around your iPhone everywhere in order to tether it via Bluetooth. The iWatch is rumored to have Bluetooth and possibly NFC, but no rumors about wifi capability. The iWatch is also rumored to run full iOS and come in a range of price points.

I can't see watching video or web surfing on a watch. Seems like a step backwards :D.

I think that there is less and less a need for the iPod touch. But there still is a need. Just a much smaller need. I have a 4th gen iPod touch I dont even include in my signature on macrumors becuase its always dead and I dont use it. Some times I plug it in just as a reminder of how iOS 6 was. I really think that the iPod touch is for people who want a iOS device that fits in their pocket buts do not want to pay for the cellar of a phone. Witch that number is very small. I see that most little kids have iPads. Mostly iPad mini's. But there are peopl e who do want iPod touch. And if it happens I think the iPod will be a lot like the iPhone 5/5c. And will have a A6 processor but will be close to the same thickness and will be aluminum and will come in 32 gigs and 64 gigs
