The only thing the 4 really needed was speed. I used one for a long time. It is pitifully slow.

I bought a 4s and THAT is a huge upgrade already.

Yeah. I got the 4 when it was first released. I still remember how blazingly quick it was on iOS 4. It was my first ever iPhone and I really did love it. Now it's unusable on the latest OS. :(

OP, I had a 5, now a 5S, and I can assure you that the performance difference is out of this world. There's absolutely nothing the 5S can't handle, its CPU is ridiculously good. And this is coming from somebody who thought the 5 was a little slow at times (it really isn't).

Just to emphasise: I can't keep up with my 5S. The speed is ridiculous.

Yeah the 5s is a big jump. Everything about it is significantly better. And the Touch ID will have u wishing you'd switched earlier

What's the big deal about touch id?
Don't you have to wait a moment for it to unlock?

How much improved is the 5s over the 4?

It's just really convenient, especially if you're jb. I have virtual home (activator can do the same) and I just lay my finger on it. It'll wake it and unlock it. Then I just touch the home button and it's like pressing the home button. Tap twice brings up multitasking. It's ine if those things that once you get it you won't want to do without it

It actually works really well for most people. I've read of folks who work in construction that are constantly working with their hands having issues with it due to their fingerprints being worn down.

Anyway, the moment that you have to wait for the unlock is much shorter than typing a passcode. In fact, I press the phone button when I'm taking my 5s out of my pocket and it's usually unlocked before I can even see he screen.

The iPhone 4 is stuck on 3G and has a single core processor.

The iPhone 4S brought dual core, SMP multi threading. This alone drastically boosted performance and brought in a new era. 5 and 5S have built on that.

You are going to see night and day performance improvement with anything 4S or newer.

I highly recommend 5/5C/5S.

Also, visit an optometrist.

Truthfully, it isn't the CPU that's allowing the 4s to have better performance than the 4, it the dual-core GPU which is also about +2x faster compared to the 4 if one of the cores were disabled. The iPhone 5 has the same GPU as the 4S but with an extra core (triple core GPU) while the 5S uses an entirely new architecture (Rogue) in the quad core configuration.

Totally agree with Jimmy James and keys of anxiety. I tried iPhone 4 on iOS 6 and iOS 7, both were horrible. I then bought an iPhone 4S on iOS 7 (secondhand, about 2 months ago) and it is a passable experience. I don't notice much camera lag but there is lag when typing in URLs and that is pretty troublesome. The main issue for me is battery. I can never get through a full day without a bump charge.

I'm still thinking about upgrading to an iPhone 5 or 5c but I haven't been able to figure out which one has better battery life. Some reviews suggest iPhone 5 on iOS 6 has better battery life (than iPhone 5 on iOS 7 or iPhone 5c on iOS 7) but what I've really hasn't been totally consistent.

iphone 4 = cute Chihuahua
iphone 5S = Beast wolf

This. It's like asking if you'd notice a difference between a Honda Prelude and a Ferrari 599? They both do the same thing right? They both have 4 tires, windshields, seats... The Ferrari has a slightly different engine and a little different styling of course.

LMAO

The 4 is a helluva nice phone (so is the Prelude as far as cars go BTW...), but it is ancient tech in comparison to the 5S. I have one of every iPhone model, and while even the 2G is still usable, unless you financially cannot muster it (and I respect you if you can't so you don't) there is NO reason not to be on the latest iteration. Every iPhone has been better than the last, and when you start talking about generation skips (not just S models) it becomes a wider and wider gap.

The 5S is a beast. The 4, while a beast in it's day, is old now, and it's not even close to a fair fight.

You'll find that the iphone 4 has better battery life, sturdier, and has a better screen.

The 5s feels like a downgrade in terms of battery life. It runs hotter, noticeably. The runtime is also less, but then again you get probably 8 times the the processing power if not more. The 5s isn't made of stainless steel but it is lighter, so take your pick there. The 5s screen is definitely plagued by vertical interlacing scan lines that you can see on sky blue backgrounds and aqua backgrounds, and sometimes any background. Apple won't acknowledge the problem because it's going to cost them too much to source better screens. Cheap cheap screens, and about 1 in 15 to 20 do not have these lines. If you've got the persistence to keep trying and buying until you get a proper unit for the most expensive phone on the market, then you can get one with a good screen. The iphone 4 had no such problems.

Lol really bro?

The iPhone 4 is also not being supported anymore for new iOS versions. The 5s is better in pretty much every way.

As much as I love my 5s - now is not the time to buy an iPhone, I'd wait for fall and see what Apple has in store for us.

I couldn't disagree more. I agree it's heavier, but not sturdier, the screen and components breaks all the same if dropped. Take your pick on that one.

Mine doesn't run hot, nor does it have bad battery life. The 5S screen is better; I have yet to see one 5S that has vertical interlacing. Not doubting they don't exist with millions sold, but I have never seen one and I have an eye problem that exacerbates that type of issue.
