The problem is that you spend an extra $200 for that upgrade from Apple.

Doing what you propose, you spend $200 + $40 = $240 for 16GB. If you upgrade to 16GB and discard the the original RAM, you pay $0 + $80 = $80 for 20GB of total RAM, of which you could use only 16GB. It gives you 4GB to sell on eBay if you have the time or inclination to get a small portion of that $80 back.

that's it you see, i didn't have the time or inclination to do what you propose. and i knew that the 2 gig dims would just rattle around my house 'til they got lost or broken. this way no dims were hurt during the making of my iMac.

lol.

now someone confronts me with what i have done and I try to rationalise my behaviour, my reasoning was, i must admit, fairly stupid.
But I just didn't like the thought of buying 2g dims i didn't want. I haven't actually been to the UK mac store to compare the price of dims i bought with the cheapest dims I could find online. TBH I thought I would loose just a few pounds doing what I did, but from the way people are talking about apple ram prices I bet I spent more than that.
In my defense I was just carried away, to a degree, by buying new mac ecstasy when I spoke to the chap on the phone. I couldn't stop myself ordering stuff, especially when I got a battery charger and iWorks (neither of which i really wanted) with my mac.
