I was just on a chat with the an apple store person, they told me there is no ram and the A5 does everything. I'm thinking bull, anyone else?

I think bull too. I'm guessing there will be 512MB. The iPhone 4 has 512, and to address a previous post, it can edit HD video. Also remember than a Mac with 512MB a few years ago could run iMovie HD just fine.

Yes and no. We don't know until we see tear downs, but the Apple store person sort of said the right thing about the A4 but probably has no real clue.

There are no separate RAM chips on the PCB for an A4 so from that perspective there are no RAM chips in the way that there are plug in DIMM slots on PCs. There is RAM in the system of course and for the A4 it's piggy-backed on top of the A4 chip itself. At first glance it looks as if it is all in a single chip but they're actually two identically sized packages bonded together, one on top of the other, a bit like two floors in a two storey building (the lower floor is the CPU and the upper floor is the RAM). If the A5 is the same then there will be no separate RAM chips on the PCB but there is definitely RAM there, it's just hiding in close proximity to the A5 chip or maybe for the A5 it is actually within the same packaging as the cores and other circuitry.

Not sure why apple never mentions ram. Well, we will know for sure by the 12th. High ram value sounds great. Bandwidth plays role in safari and how safari renders. I bet there is 512 as well. Maybe dual core has 256 ram and a separate 256 off the chip. Gizmodo was not invited. I would not believe them. Not sure why apple so secretive on memory. Maybe, flash requires more ram.

Echo.. Julian. Two separate rams. Maybe having the ram so close to the chip allows less needed and lack of flash.

Actually, that can be true. Not that there is NO RAM, but there are many SoC's where the ram is part of the package. It all depends on the packaging engineer. It could very well be that the A5 SoC houses the RAM as well, which would also mean a normal teardown won't be able to determine the amount of RAM until the package is x-rayed.

my thought, not that it's worth anything around many of the posters here who are far more schooled in the way computers work but, my feeling is that it will not be a gig, people are right more than likely they would have touted that.

you diehards can wish for this until the tear downs reveal it has the same amount of ram as the iPhone.

With the retail price points unchanged and some major improvements in speed, making it thinner, one wonders why they didn't do this in the first place, and adding the 2 cheapo cameras they stuffed in there, not changing much else, how could they add 3 X the RAM some are wishing for.

Apple have probably ordered and have on hand enough displays to hold them over to the next incarnation, bringing down the cost of at part significantly so they could make a few improvements without raising the retail price.

I wont be surprised if it's 256, but given the iphone 4 is 512, I would say they'd have to at least match it. I would wager anyone $1000 bucks right now it's not a gig, I'm that sure of it primarily because of the pricing structure.

I just think Apple believes its not warranted in the product they designed. you all can cry and whine and howl to the moon, but see guys have a reputation of doing it their way and their way they do it, so either get over it or go somewhere else for your tablet needs!

my 2 cents.

What in the heck makes you think those apple reps even know?

Silly me, I thought an Apple rep answering questions about an apple designed product would know the major specifications. They are there to answer the questions of the media, of course they should know. It not like are doormen.

It would be pretty stupid if they kept the RAM at 256mb in iPad 2 after upping the iPhone to 512mb to handle multitasking in the same OS.

perhaps some of the RAM in iPhone 4 is dedicated to ensuring the phone function remains speedy/ready despite what else you may be doing?

unlikely. when you install SBSettings on an iphone and close the phone app, it doesn't use much RAM.
