It’s 10% smaller. Size of battery has no affect on charging speeds tho. And I saw a test that the 11 Pro beat out the 12 pro by one hour and some change. So we should all see less battery time then the 11 series.

The size of the battery definitely affects the charging speed. If you are going from 0% to 100% on a 2000mWh battery and 0% to 100% on a 4000mWh battery with the same 5W charger than the larger battery will take twice as long to charge.
 
I know you directed this question for another person but Anyways I returned my MagSafe charger for a simple reason. With the silicone case on it generated significant heat to the phone. Not as much with the case off but imagine having to take your case off and on all the time just to charge the phone. To be fair I returned it the same time I picked up my max so I didn’t have a chance to try it with the leather case. Any charger That generates too much heat to the phone is a no go for me. Corded or wireless.
So since I use a magnetic mount in my car and have to put a magnet inside of my case. I would have to take that off to wirelessly charge it. So I know how you feel. I was hoping MagSafe would cure all my problems but it didn’t. MagSafe case was not strong enough to stick to a car mount..:(

Absolutely despise it (heat). While I love the concept, and love the implementation of that concept - it gets way too hot for me to feel comfortable using it. Funny enough, while charging it wasn't horribly hot. However, once at 100% I had my phone overheat like crazy several times - like burning hot uncomfortable to the touch hot even though it was at 100%.

Yeah, I'll stay with wired chargers for now, sadly.

If I got a new phone every year, I don't think I'd care as much. But I'm planning on keeping my phone for awhile (I say this every year then end up upgrading the next anyway) lol. I actually bought this phone with my Apple Card vs the Apple Upgrade Plan. So ... maybe I will keep it longer?

Well ya if you compare that. When have you ever seen a double in size battery upgrade in a year?! Lol They have all taken about an hour and a half for years. Cause it seems every time they put in a bigger battery, the charging speed also goes up for that year. So it basically has stayed the same time frame for a full charge for a while..

Perhaps that was an extreme example, but even a 10% smaller battery will charge 10% faster with the same charger. The reason the charging speed keeps going up is because they allow bigger and bigger chargers. But if you are using the same charger a smaller battery will charge faster every time.

Ya, I think they are upping the charging speed almost yearly now. Last year was 18 wired/7.5 wireless. This year 20 wired/15 wireless. By the time we actually get a 4500mah battery.(that would be the day) The speed it takes should go up too. Hopefully. Although I kill my battery health with all this fast charging. I think I am done with it.

While I do think batteries of today handle "rapid charging" better than they did in the past, it still definitely affects their longevity especially if there is a great deal of heat.

I attribute a lot of my iPhone's health to the fact that I rarely drop below 80% of battery with my daily usage so the charging is rarely full speed... ever. I always end a year+ with 100%+ battery health - or within 5% of capacity when I got them (back when I monitored with coconutBattery).

I also like to charge with external Anker batteries too so I'm not confined to a location and can charge whenever I want. (Usually 80-95%).

People still demand faster charging! While it is nice to have the ability, I rarely use it.

That’s crazy, you never go below 80%?! How is that? How many times do you actually charge then a day?

Im confused on that part, it’s better to stay as high as you can instead of let’s say get down to 20% then go back up to 100%?

Well I use it heavy, specially for work. 8-10 hours screen on time. I also use it while charging which just creates more power being sucked in(more heat) I need to stop doing that. I guess I can just try and charge through out the day. See how that goes.

In the end, it's a phone. It should make your life better, not your life inconvenienced to make your phone better. Right? :)

When I used to travel a lot for work, I usually took my 10,000 mAh Anker with me and kept my phone topped off while reading/watching in the airplane, or waiting for my next plane. I don't know, just a habit I have that I enjoy. Most people I know think I'm a little nuts about that tho, lol.

Well the thing is with me. I sell after a year. I can’t get as much money for a phone with 88% bat health compared to one at 95% or better. That’s where you get the good bucks. So whatever I can, I will do..

Reading this has me slightly concerned. Bought a 20w charger for my 12pm but wondering now if this was a mistake. I’ve got the old standard 5w brick and this new 20w one. Should I be looking at something in between? I don’t NEED fast charging as I’m home most of the time currently anyway.

I think most chargers are 10 watts which is the middle road and sufficient enough to charge your iPhone 12 PM (I have one as well).

I am staying away from MagSafe. I think it's an awful invention. The cases are ugly. The fast-charging is not good for your phone's battery. However if you upgrade every year then that's not really something to be concerned about.

The standard apple one is 5w i believe. They don’t do a 10w, next is 12w then 20w. Probably safest to go with 5 or 12?
 
How hot should plugs get when charging, as a rule of thumb? Should they be warm at all or just normal temperature as they would be if switched off? I ask because I use a normal 5w brick for my iphone 12 pro max and for my ipad air 4 the 20w brick that came in the box and both get warm (not boiling) but quite warm when charging. Compare this to my work laptop which is literally plugged in all day and it is as cold as when it is not charging anything. I don't really understand why the phone and ipad chargers get warm. Also, is the 20w ipad charger a battery enemy as it would be with a phone? Would seem strange if it is given that it is the brick that the ipad is shipped with.
 
I would go higher. 10-12 if possible.
For what reason? Speed? I've decided that speed is simply not an issue for 2 reasons, 1. the battery is excellent so lasts all day and 2. I'm currently at home all the time so always near a plug (and even when back in the office I'll always be near a plug).
 
I charge my 12PM with the old 5w brick, it takes a comical ~ 4.5-5 hours to go from 0-100 when I last checked. The phone lasts long enough and rarely dips below 20%, I burst charge when I need or charge overnight so the speed or the lack of it doesn't bother me.

I used the 18watt charger exclusively on my iPhone 11pro max for a full year, charging every night and also left the optimized battery charging off, and after 12 months my battery was still at 98%,

Hey Mac2019 - thanks for replying to my post. Hopefully I can help answer your questions:

The 5w old iPhone power brick got way too hot for me. The phone was nice and cool when I was using my 11 Pro Max and 12 Pro Max with my 5w old iPhone charging brick. It wasn't warm, it was uncomfortably hot for me (the charging brick near the wall plug).

Agreed, a 5w brick will be better for the battery than a 12w brick but I'd argue the difference isn't a ton. A 18w or 20w brick? Yeah, a bit more (the higher you go the more damage) but still would argue that over the course of 2 years most users won't tell much of a difference. I haven't done scientific tests but in the 2 years I usually own my phones I haven't noticed a difference between me doing a 5w charger and my wife using a 18w+ charger (we always get the same phones). Over the course of 5+ years I'm sure the effect is more pronounced.

Oh, my last comment was just that in the last 5 years most chargers for phones today are a lot higher wattage/voltage than they were pre-5+ years ago. Most phone manufacturers have really upped the juice going into these phones and included power bricks that are a lot larger than yesteryear's chargers. Indeed, a 5w charger is a 5w charger 5 years ago or today. I meant to say that today, phones usually come with a lot larger (wattage/voltage) chargers than they used to - I find these chargers don't get anywhere near as hot as the 5w charger does with my 12 Pro Max despite charging a lot faster.
