Just saying: You could call your nearest Apple store; they will know the definite answer.

Yep, £99 inc VAT, but you shouldn't have to replace your battery so soon?

This answer is heretical! Call an apple store and get an immediate and correct answer or start a thread on MR and wait. No contest, start a thread on MR and wait.

My battery health hovers around 80%

It has fallen to 78% before showing the service battery message.

I didn't manage to get to a apple store and the message and sub 80% hadn't returned

I have a 2011 MBA - is the 80% 1000 cycles valid for my laptop which is out of warranty or would I still need to pay for a replacement battery if it falls below 80% again on my 170 cycles?

If it's out of warranty then I don't think the 80% / 1000 cycles thing matters, you would have to pay the battery replacement fee.

Very easy to do yourself.
I just removed one yesterday to replace the HDD.
