Congrats Bro!

When I proposed to my wife over 2 years ago, I was making just over $50k a year and bought her a very nice ring (18k White Gold, 1CT TTW diamond) for just under $3k. Probably not the most expensive, but she loved it and so did I.

Let me be the first to congratulate you both. :)
thank-you
And let me be the second. Congrats! :D
thank-you

She'd be nuts not to love it. :) It's gorgeous and I wish you two all the best.

I totally forgot about your thread. It's amazing how the time has past from you knowing that you wanted to marry her, to looking for a ring, picking the ring, saving up for the ring, and then proposing.

Marriage is one of those few purely beautiful things in the world. For two sane people to want to commit there life’s together, forever, takes a step of not only of love, but trust, and faith. It's like you know the statistics, you know that there will be good times and bad times, but still you choose to spend your life together.

I congratulate you and wish a joyful, love-filled marriage.

In the first hand i would like to congratulate you for your engagement. There are variety of diamonds available on different rates based on their composition.
get one in a rate you are comfortable with.

I'm a jeweller and from experience women are always looking for at least half a carat and a G/H in colour VS1 in clarity, this is in the med/high range in qaulity, expect to pay around £3000 I personally wouldn't go any lower than that, take these specs to your local jeweller and do a deal (the mark up on jewelry is about 300%) huge profit margin therefore loads of room to barter!
Hope that helps!

Funny thread ressurection. The OP got engaged in March of 08. This thread was started in September 07. For those of you still giving ring buying advice, I'm sure they are married by now. Squeeks is still an active member, maybe he'll chime in and tell us how things are going. :)

Yes squeeks, lets hear it!

BTW, the thread was bumped by a passive spammer - someone who posted in it with a bland reply so they could promote their spammy signature link. I reported it ages ago and that reply is gone.

I value all ya'lls opinion, so what do you think?

General rule of thumb ive been told is 3 months pay, but holy crap thats a lot of money (~ $6000 for me)

I was more looking in the 3k to 4k range...is this too much? Dose a ring really need to cost several thousand, or is something more along the lines of $800-$1200 suficient?

I dont want to be cheap, but at the same time im trying to save for our house which we will be building in about 2 years, im looking to buy the ring in about 4-5 months.

Thoughts and opinions anyone?

three month of my pay or three month of her pay? she makes more money. a lot more:(

ad Apollo1: this diamond stuff is quite complicated. how do i find out what a realistic price of a 1 carat high quality stone is as a basis for bartering?

Naturally a jeweler would want you to spend £3000.

I'll bet that the original poster asking the question is divorced by now, and the woman has the ring and he has the payments.
