Here in Bayern(Bavaria) where there are tons of hills, many of the locals switch to neutral when going down hills, supposedly saves lots of gas. My American colleague tried it, and it worked, maybe too well, she got a speeding ticket because the speedometer doesn't work when in neutral :p

you know putting you car in neutral going down hill in a modern fuel injected car burns more gas. If you leave it in gear the car does not inject any fuel to keep the motor running. If you put the car in neutral it has to do it to keep the motor idling.

Nothing. Move to a city with good public transportation. Stop giving the oil companies your money. I haven't owned a car in almost a decade, and I can't tell you how free it makes you feel. I watch the news and am amazed that people still put up with this.

give me a higher gas prices and NOT living in a city. To each his own.
I quote you back :)

...am amazed that people still put up with this....(this being living in a city).

urbanite bullsh*t drives me nuts.

give me the forest and countryside anyday :)

To each his own. I just like being around all kinds of different people. I grew up in the country and couldn't stand it- it was lonely and people always were getting in my business. Living in the city is magical and full of opportunity for me. The potential for personal and career growth is unlimited and all right outside your door. Of course it's not for everyone, but I love it.

Cost my mum £66 the other day to completely fill up her tank, I can't be bothered to learn to drive because it's only going to get worse...

Gas around my area is $3.49 a gallon - I can fill up my Breeze at a hair over $30. 'course that's from a quarter-tank empty.... used to put me back about $20.

Hurts my pocket book. Sniffle Sniffle.

Interesting. Did not know that.

On a side note, I know some folks who turn off the engine when waiting at a stop light. To me, this doesn't make sense for a variety of reasons, one of which what happens if your car won't start. Not sure how much fuel one really saves doing this either.

I just tested that. Our brand new outback has an MPG meter in it, and going down hills it would go to 99.9 (Max) where as pushing in the clutch i got 51.2. I've heard that modern engines don't burn any fuel when going down a hill, well almost none, where as idling, it uses fuel to keep it spinning, where as before the car was running the engine.

priuss turn off after a while/at stop lights

I drive a Prius. I generally pay right around $30 to fill up the tank, maybe just a bit more lately. It's a ten-gallon tank, and that's good for about 450 miles with a gallon to spare. Not too bad, all things considered...

This might be a solution to my immediate problem.

How would I go about getting a status card??

BTW, I'm not an "I-Was-Here-First", but is there someone I could pay-off.

;)

Its not really about getting a status card, just buy your gas from a reservation based gas station. But the tribe or nation has to have not signed over their rights, which most of them have. Where I live, we still uphold our sovereignty so they can't tax us.
They won't take a status card at a gas pump.

But if your serious, you have to prove your lineage and fill out an application from which ever tribe your from.

i agree. hope i didn't come off as too combative. benefits to each.

Really? Can you say anything about your life there? I know it's way off topic but it's too interesting to ignore.

What do you want to know? I own my house (very lucky 0 interest housing loan, passed on from my parents) I graduated, went to college. You'll need to explain more. The interesting thing in my opinion is that I am about 100ft away from the US/CAN border. So I have dual citizenship. :) its nice.

Hello LeahM - I don't know what to ask without appearing rude or daft! I just wondered what it was like to be on a reservation. Is it a vibrant place with tradition and soul or modern and downcast? In the weekend papers there's occasionally articles about reservation life and it's always negative. I think it was at Pineridge where I read about a drug I'd never heard of before called Nazi Crank or something. Just wondered how you and your family are. You know ... straight from the horses mouth. Sorry .. shouldn't have enquired.
