Thanks for the replies. I didn't think to look at how they handle tethering using other smartphones, nor did I look at it from the point of view that, when tethered, the device that is using the bandwidth isn't actually the iPhone, but the laptop. Good perspectives, which make it easier to see the situation from the AT&T side.
I guess I'm just pissed because I remember the AT&T Wireless days, when they didn't charge for every little thing, and even incoming text messages were free. Starting with Cingular, I began to wonder when it would occur to them to find a way to charge for powering your device on and off. It seemed like when they brought in tethering, I (we) might finally be able to truly get some data bang for our bucks. Anyway, it is what it is, and we pay for what we feel we need. Thanks again for giving me a different perspective on it.
