Never check them. But I’ve been wearing Apple Watch since version 0 and they’ve all made it through a couple of years of use without any major cosmetic damage. I’m an office worker, so there isn’t much ways for the watch to get damaged. But I occasionally knock them against a wall or door frame. One of them once got scratched, but it wasn’t bad. And I think that would be one scratch out of more than 10 years of wearing these things.

I don't bathe with my watch. Just that this has been my practice with my series 5 for the past 5 years and it hasn't seemed any worse for wear. Come to think of it, I have had my Series 5 replaced before for a chipping issue which may or may not be similar to this incident.

I will take note of using a microfibre cloth from now on. It's just that I rinse my watch in the toilet and my bath towel is the closest and most accessible to me there. 😝
Wow the series 5 aluminium chipped?

Was that one dropped before?

Thanks, Pug.

Ironically, I clipped it on something earlier, and that set off the checking.

It’s such a horrible sensation.

You’ve mentioned before about your sweatband method, which is good for certain occasions, but of course it’s when you’re not wearing it that you sometimes catch it on something.

Wishing you well, mate.
Several credit cards will take care of a repair on electronics if you submit a claim. It has to meet certain thresholds, but I did report a scratch one time and got a full refund.

Was it scraped in any way?

I honestly don’t think so. Just got a bad batch, I guess. Apple ended up replacing it, and the replacement series 5 has worked fine ever since (none of the issues resurfaced).

Perils of being a day 1 early adopter, I suppose. But otherwise, I don’t have any complaints about my series 10. Good screen, great battery life, and smooth performance. Remains an excellent companion to my iPhone still.

My first Apple watch was Series 7 and I didn't even buy a screen protector for it. It does have some scratches on it. So my Series 10 Titanium GPS plus Cellular, I did buy a Screen Protector for it.
Other than cleaning it every few days, I don't really check it. I have a Bulova with a diamond chip on every number, and I damaged the screen while moving. I have to actually take that in and get repaired as I love it.

I occasionally take a quick glance at it when I remove it to shower or put it on the charger, but as long as there's no glaringly obvious damage that's good enough. I've never been one to obsess over scrutinizing my phones/watches for imperceptible chips or scratches - if they're not obvious at a casual glance, they don't exist for me.

I'm not easy on my watches, but my black Ultra 2 still looks brand new after 7 months. The furthest I go with cleaning it is giving it a quick swipe with a damp towel before I put it back on after I get out of the shower, or rubbing it across my t-shirt or shorts to clean fingerprints/sweat off the watch face when I'm out and about.

I've had an S0, S4, and SE II. Over the 4-5 years that I tend to wear them, they get their fair share of nicks and scratches on them, but it's nothing that's ever overly impacted how well they work or how I use them.

I have micro scratches on the gold stainless steel Apple Watch s6, almost a year old now

My series 1 has the most scratches and has a dent in one corner

Series 10 Natural Titanium here. A few micro scratches that can be seen when you look extremely close in the right lighting. I have made peace with it. Any polished watch will get micro scratches eventually.

FYI I have real bad OCD when it comes to this stuff, but after awhile you just have to get over it and live your life because there is nothing you can do to stop it.

Hey man! Did you visit the Genius Bar at the Apple Store today? I heard you scheduled an appointment with a genius to have your Series 10 Apple Watch jet black checked out over the weekend.

How did the experience go? Also, did you happen to get the “Close Your Rings” activity challenge pin while you were there?

Thank you for checking in with me. It’s been a busy few days.

So I went to the Apple Store on Sunday, they sent it to their main service centre for inspection. It arrived this morning, and I received a notification in the afternoon that a replacement would be shipped out, and it would be mailed to me tomorrow.

It’s about 6:30 pm at the time of me typing this out now.

I don’t think they had the challenge pins there when I went. Maybe it’s not a thing in my country.

I dug out my older series 5 and have been using it for the past 2 days. Battery life is shot (it’s at 78% battery health), it’s at 30% right now whereas my series 10 would be around 70%.

Funny thing though. There is a huge difference in the sensitivity of the fitness tracking. Like with my current series 10, I am barely registering any exercise minutes throughout the day. Yet with my series 5, I am easily closing all my rings just by walking around at work. I don’t know this is so (and maybe it’s why the battery seems so bad?).

Just thought I would share it here.

Been quite busy today, so I apologize for not getting back to you sooner!

at least it’s getting sorted ✔️ ✔️

Did you have to pay for the repair, or did the Genius say it’s under warranty when they checked it out?

Regarding calibration, the Apple Watch Series 5 still does it correctly, while the Series 10 doesn’t. So, can you ensure that it’s properly calibrated for your steps and move/exercise rings by doing a test walk on it when you get it back?

My replacement Apple Watch was mailed to my house today. As it’s within warranty, I wasn’t charged anything for it. So far, looks good as new.

My series 5 was a fine replacement these 3 days. Gonna charge it back up to 100% before it goes back into the drawer.

Somehow, typing this makes me feel like a heartless ingrate.

That’s great! 😊 I’m so glad the Genius ordered you a new watch. Just pair it back to your iPhone and don’t turn off the Apple Watch Series 5 until everything’s set up. It’ll pass on all the data, including the watch faces, to the new watch. ⌚️

Alternatively, you can restore it from the last backup when you unpaired the S10 at the Apple Store when you handed it over to the Genius.

Phew, thanks to the Genius, it’s covered as a defect under warranty, just like the story I sent you earlier from an Apple Watch user in Germany who had the same issue with the same model Apple Watch as you!

I don't think I got round to thanking you for bringing that incident and that idea to my attention, and to @The Cockney Rebel for starting this thread. I was aware of the flaws from a few weeks back (I do rinse my watch and its bands every week because I sweat a lot), but due to being swamped with work of late, the thought of bringing it to the App Store just never occured to me and well, every other part of the watch was still working fine. :D
Why not 40-60%? Storing a battery at 100% charge isn't the best for its health.
No particular reason. The watch was down to about 40% when I got home, I placed it on the charger before going for dinner, and that was the percentage when I finally returned to my room later at round 8pm. 😛

My pleasure, Abazigal.

I had also seen defects like that happen in the Jet Black iPhone 7, it is the same finishing process as this colour with the Apple Watch. It was a coincidence that your Apple Watch presented with the same issue like the one I mentioned; and you also got it replaced too.

Same here, I do go to the Apple Store weekly but usually on weekends, I only go weekdays sometimes like day offs if I do not get to go on weekends. Bruh I would had better chance getting the AW anniversary pins and enjoyed a day off if my physics class got cancelled on 24 April instead of 29th April!

Another interesting observation - yesterday (Friday) was the first full day of work for me while wearing my replacement Apple Watch, and I ended the day with 23 exercise minutes clocked. A far cry from the 53 minutes registered on my Series 5, but also a vast improvement from the
I will likely never close all 3 rings without also working out in the evening, but it’s been fascinating seeing the disparity in the sensor tracking. I will have to find time later to rearrange the app layout on my watch as well.

Either way, no plans to use a case with my watch anytime soon.

Did you log a workout on the new Apple Watch, or are you primarily physically active?

If you’re not sure, you can recalibrate your Apple Watch. Here’s how:

1. Go to the Apple Support website: https://support.apple.com/en-us/105048
2. Follow the instructions to run or walk a test lap around the local park or a city for at least 30 minutes.

Additionally, ensure that all your health data, including height and weight, is accurate. Also, uncheck the wheelchair option if it’s turned on. This option will replace all running and walking workouts with wheelchair pushing if it’s turned on.

Regarding Apple Watch cases, the choice is largely yours. Most wearers only put a case on their Apple Watch if they need to perform heavy-duty work or heavy weightlifting, such as traditional bench press. For instance, I use a clear case with my S6 on Tuesdays when I machine parts on the CNC mill and lathe.

The specks on my series 10 watch seem to be returning.

I am just not going to bother with it this time round.
O rly?
Had you been taking care of that replacement s10?

I encourage you to give AppleCare a call to discuss what is going on with that replacement unit. They are willing to resend you a new one if it really bothers you.
