It seems that most of the computers have a life of 3-4 years before the new models are to good to resist. The only time I strayed from the 3-4 years for me was when We went INTEL.

many firms have a 3- 5 year depreciation schedule if they try to run up-to-date software at decent speeds :)

i remember holding out for a G5 laptop ... and then intel came and changed the whole game

I seem to upgrade to a new computer every 3 years. I also like to have the one computer at a time.

I bought my Macbook 2ghz a few months after they were released so mid 2006 I think. I'll be upgrading early next year so that will be close to three years.

Either a redesigned macbook pro, or a new aluminium macbook if it can run starcraft 2 well!

Well, my first Mac, but i reckon in 2 years or so i will upgrade.

But hey, next year if a Quad Core MBP comes out, i may have to strain myself :p

My rule is 3 years minimum in terms of time, and double the specs.

Although I did buy the Intel iMac the same year I bought the PowerBook, but as the family computer, so it was an addition vs. an upgrade.

Once I am done with traveling, I don't think I can justify upgrading for quite sometime. The iMac is pretty fast for what I would need to do with it. I am only an occasional gamer, so I don't see any need to upgrade soon.

I tend to upgrade every 2-3 years because I'm using it for graphics work and adobe keeps making their application more processor-intensive. PLUS my projects seems to get bigger and bigger!!

Hurry with the MacBook Pro QuadCore!!

I still have my G4. But I use a G5 2X2.5 and MacBook Pro 2.3 most of the time.

Skipping generations makes sense to me. I'll probably bite at the next MacBook Pro update and the Nehalem Mac Pro.

Right now, I have a Power Mac G5 (in stellar shape) and a PowerBook G4. The G4 is being retired, as its video has gone haywire and MacBook Pro is on its way and should be here Saturday! I'm planning on keeping the G5 until mold starts growing on the processors, 'cause it hasn't skipped a beat. That'll leave me with a solid desktop and portable. The G5 should last until probably 2010-11, by which time it will be the equivalent of an iMac G3's value today. But, it still runs Pro Tools great.
