I had the 1 gen and now the 3rd gen iPad and loved both of them. I see a lot of people on here who seem to upgrade with each release. Just curious, why are you compelled to change to a new iPad (iPad 4) when you have a perfectly good one already?

Once a year up until the iPad 3.

I got the iPad 1 base version in 2010 because it's a new product.
I got the iPad 2 3G version because I really liked the redesign, the lightness so I wanted to bring it with me outside.
I got the iPad 3 top version because of the retina display and I keep using more and more of it.
But the iPad 4? Okay, twice as fast... for... what? Maybe next year if they have another redesign (make it lighter please) or upgrading the camera to the iPhone's level then I may consider.
And the iPad mini. It's so nice to have a smaller and lighter device but I need the retina screen. I read text/magazine very often so it must have a crisp display. I upgrade my computer to an rMBP 15" in August and none of my future Apple products will have a non-retina display anymore.

Every 2 years seems like the way to go. Just got my refurb 2 last month and I think I'll be fine for at least a year. Won't upgrade unless the next models completely blow it out of the water in terms of performance. The 3 isn't even faster than the 2.

More or less when Apple drops support. I own the first generation iPad and will upgrade to the fourth generation (I'm waiting a couple of weeks to see if there'll be a Black Friday sale). After that I'll probably upgrade in a few years after they've gone 64-bit (and 128 GB storage!).

Still rocking the iPad 1 16gb wifi. Was going to get the iPad 3 but held off because I wanted something faster than the A5. Now with the iPad 4 I want something lighter. If the mini had a retina display and a A6x processor I'd be all over it. So I will be holding out for a little longer.

I do have a Retina MacBook Pro 15" which I plan on using until it dies or I cannot do my job on it anymore . I didn't own a Mac prior to that though.

iPad 2 was my first and current. I may get the 4, depending on whether battery life and heat are better than the 3. They were both a noticeable step down from my 2.

people spend money differently. i only shop once a year on clothes IF I need it....but majority of the time i rarely buy much. The things i do spend money on are tech stuff. BUT it depends on the deal. I've had a 1, several 2's, a 3, but going to skip the 4 and just get 2 iPad Mini's.

The 1 i bought new after the 2 was released for $299. The 2's were bought for $339 after the 3's were released, the 3 was bought with 5% off at target plus a $40 gift card......so when you buy at cheaper prices you can easily turn around and get most of your money back so you're basically just renting it for a little bit and get a brand new one again.

The mini's will be the 1st one's that will officially be apple retail prices.

Some people like to keep stuff until they die, some people like to update when there is a deal to be had.

I bought the first iPad (32/3G), skipped iPad2 - didn't need cameras, waited for LTE & Retina display (spoiled by the iPhone4 at the time).

Bought the iPad3 (32/LTE), and now a Mini (16/LTE) and a mini for the wife.

The 5thGen iPad would have to be a significant change for me to upgrade, otherwise I'll buy a refurb 4thGen to get all Lightning Connectors as hopefully by then I'll have more accessories/chargers

So far, every 2 generations. I find there is something worthwhile after 2 generations. I just upgraded from an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4.

I just received the phone...and the differences are dramatic. I'll see about the iPad when it's delivered tomorrow.

I still have my iPad 2, and I'm yet to upgrade as it's working fine for me at the moment. Whether my next iPad (if I choose to get one) will be an iPad or iPad Mini, I'm not yet sure.

I have the iPad [3] and have no desire to upgrade to the [4]. So far I plan on keeping this one until its useless or something bad happens to it, then will upgrade to what ever is out.

That's where I'm at. I had the 1st gen, then upgraded to 3rd. This one is powerful enough for me. Whenever Apple stops support for new iOS updates on it is probably when I will switch, because it won't be to long after that apps start requiring those same newer versions of iOS.

I got my first MacBook in 2007 and upgraded just this year to a Pro. I honestly could have waited until next year, but I had the money this year, I probably won't next year due to a trip I'm taking and my in-laws really needed a decent laptop so they got my old one. I'd like to hang onto this one for at least 6 years.

I also got my first iPad (3) this year. I don't plan on upgrading until I absolutely have to.

i got my first iPhone (4) a little over two years ago and plan on upgrading to the 5 in a few months if we change carriers. If not, we may wait another year.

I skipped the ipad1 and got the ipad2. I skipped the 3 and I'm getting the 4. The mini does nit interest me, hardware wise it is stuck in the stone age.

The next mini would at the very least match the current Gen ipad at the time of it's release for me to consider it.

After the 1st three, I've got upgrade fatigue. My 3 works perfectly well for my simple needs. Love the screen, though I find it to be a bit heavy for extended use when it's not in a stand.

Only reason why I'd get another one now is if the 3 no longer does what I need it to do or breaks out of warranty. Otherwise, there'd have to be a knock me off my socks, this is better than sliced bread and will enhance my life feature to do so.

I have owned and resold every ipad since the first generation.

I would have skipped the 4 this year and not bought any at all, but the mini was just too good to resist!

Have the original 1st gen iPad I bought at launch. Never upgraded it as I found the 10" tablet size/weight was too big - so retina display and camera didn't really make it any other iterations appealing to me as long as it was still 10".
Recently had a Nexus 7 for a trip through Asia and loved the size but the tablet app ecosystem doesn't compare to iOS's.

..So I'm getting a Mini and selling both - I think I may have finally found my tablet :)

My first iPad was 2gen and I upgraded when 3gen came because of the retina screen, because I use mine extensively for reading pdf documents. I have no desire to upgrade this time around. I'm not upgrading until a) the one I have doesn't work anymore or b) an upgrade would represent a substantial improvement to my work flow.

Thats all I wanted :D

funnily enough i would never buy anything else apple make, no imac, no macmini, no macbook, no apple tv, i dont even have an iphone anymore.

Theres just somethign about ipads that i have found great since day 1 and i can't stop myself getting new ones.

i was surprised how little i cared about the ipad 4 actually, i wonder if apple knew this and released the mini at the same time so that people like me would still buy something.

baaa baaaa

I'll gladly take your previous generation iDevices but since you sell your previous generations and upgrade, you're not really blowing that much money as other people who have all their other devices. Smart move!

Cause I'm not;)

Hahaha. I like that. I see what you did there. You get bonus points for that!

In all seriousness, I completely understand where you're coming from. At the end of the day I don't mean to "rip-on" or "troll" you or other people. There seriously are people who are iSheep though. By that I mean, they close their eyes and think Apple is everything and bash on everything else. I mean, don't get me wrong, Apple products are great but you have to admit when you only buy/believe what one company says without weighing in on the other side, it's not cool. It's not only with us Apple people but also Android fans. Nawmeen?!?!?!:)
