Almost never, but I chose once a week cause iTunes pops up when connect my iPad 2 to Xcode to push code to it. And that happens at least a few days a week. (hurrying to close iTunes cause it steels cpu time lol)

Next time it activates iTunes, just go to the device summary and uncheck the "open iTunes when connected" box. Then you won't have to hurry and close iTunes.

Probably about weekly. I sync my iPhone way more because I'm more concerned about keeping my calendar up-to-date on that, also I switch up the music/apps on my phone more often.

I only sync mine when there is an iOS upgrade, I have purchased a new app I need to back up, or I purchased a song from Itunes I want to load. I charge via the AC adaptor. I follow the same formula on my IPod Touch.

sums up my experience minus the ipod touch

As little as I can get away with, basically just for upgrades (same for the iPhone). All critical data is cloud synced with either Dropbox or MobileMe or various in app wireless setups to the laptop. iTunes is the biggest POS software I've used in over 20 years, and I use it as rarely as possible, since it consistently eats music I've paid for, destroys playlists I've made, and is a poor excuse for a reliable or efficient backup system for photos or documents.

as little as possible.

this is due to my excitement over devices like the ipad replacing laptops and conventional PCs.

but i know that doesn't make for a good reason not to back up my *****.

This. Perfectly explains how I feel/what I do. If iOS 5 doesn't free our mobile devices I'm going to be very, very dissapointed.
