I totally agree. Way to trick the 56% of people who said they couldn't afford it in the beginning. I mean this one is actually MORE expensive than the first, ridiculous!

But, I will be buying it and it will be my first iPhone.

For you it might be, but not everybody.

I'm 33, and pay about the same for the contract now as I will when I switch to o2.

love my iphone. Use it every day (texts, calls, browsing) pleased that O2 increased the allowances on my tarrif early on. Upgrade options seem pretty reasonable too

My parents pay my phone bill, I do have a job though. My and my mom went half and half on the first iPhone. That's not going to work this time, so I am just buying the phone and the accessories/protection plan myself and she'll be paying the monthly bill.

I don't think the data plan is too much but I own a business so I can write at least a portion of the cost off of taxes. My problem is that I live in an area that will most likely not have 3g access for many years, but that would be a problem with any 3g phone.

Don't be afraid 'children', but I am older than time itself, 111 on the 11th of July!

Sometimes I'm too embarrassed to say my age so I just say that I'm as old as my tongue and a little older than my teeth.

I am going to celebrate my birthday with a 16GB black iPhone 3G and I couldn't care less how much it, or the data plan, costs! :D

Stone aged

I'm not real happy about the cost associated with using it, but from what I can see it is comparable to others.

It will be my first personal cell phone. Work supplied a BB, but they will be cutting back so the timing will be just right to switch.

daaayamn! haha

I'm 14 but I only have an iPod touch... maybe I'll get an iPhone this summer if I can get a job detassling or some farm work, but it wouldn't be a 3G as I have wi-fi nearly all the time and I doubt I would mind EDGE much... plus I like the metal back better and I would rather pay a higher initial cost than a higher monthly cost because my money from a possible temporary summer job might... just might... run out eventually.lol

All things considering, if your poll has something like "40-stone age" you do realize there is a HUGE gap there to fill right? I mean, tell me that the people bitching about the plan being too expensive aren't being seen as younger folks who can't afford the plan. Rest assured, I can pay my bills and I've mentioned that $30 a month for something is expensive when I give consideration to the fact that it'll run me $30 a month for 24 months minimum.

That said, polling people on their age in an iPhone forum is going to yield you poor results. But if you're just curious then of course, carry on. :)

im 23 and i dont have any problems with the cost ( i get 21% off on service through work ) other than i wish there were more options with the minutes.

i use more than 450 but less than 900 and there isnt anything in between (yet).

thanks jessica for your input on my "scientific" study.

32.

And though I could easily afford the increased rate, I still am upset by it. One of the things I most likes about the 1st gen was the plan. I would much rather pay upfront than have the true cost be "hidden" in a contract. I think its outrageous that the iPhone 3G is being marketed as half the price, when it clearly isn't.

More and more I'm happy that I got my iPhone a few months ago and have the choice now between the two. I'm still not sold that the iPhone 3G is worth the extra $160 from the added $10 a month for data and $5 a month for texts (even more since 200 texts isn't any where near enough for me). Subsidies are always a scam... I'm leaning towards waiting at least until Xmas to upgrade, if not until the 3rd Gen comes out.

46, so Stone Age I guess...LOL

Here is my take on the cost...

The iPhone data plan is now the same as the BlackBerry and other Smart Phone plans.

If you are "used" to those plans and costs, then the iPhone plan only makes sense - why should it be cheaper.

If you are coming from a "normal" Cell phone experience, then you have never seen data plan costs, and you are going to probably be upset over the cost.

If you are coning from the previous iPhone, then your costs are going up $10-$15/month, and you are probably struggling with whether or not it is worth it - especially if you don't have 3G in your area.

All of the Cell phone add-on's are expensive - texting, data, etc. Most of us are not used to the data costs, so it is a bit of a shock.

Kind of like when we all went from paying $19.95 for AOL dialup to $45.99 for broadband. Hard to swallow at first, but over time it becomes a necessity.

Unfortunately all of the cell phone companies plans are similar, so there isn't any real competition. Sprint is losing market share, and is starting to offer lower cost plans, but we will have to see if AT&T tries to compete.

Since no one else has the iPhone, I'm skeptical that we will see any changes.

The only reason for AT&T to lower the costs, is to try to lure in people who won't consider the iPhone because of the Data plan.

Personally, I would have rather they left the purchase price at $399, and kept the lower monthly cost....

I chuckle when I see these polls. Stone Age? Those of us who are older have many more years experience with technology, I have been using computers for 28 years!

I see that the younger generation uses technology, but often many of them don't really know technology. My niece is 28, she has a PC, iPod, PVR all that stuff, but has no clue how it works or how to troubleshoot them. Its a good thing in a way, but they are not more technologically savvy than us geriatrics.

We cut our teeth on DOS 1.0, dBase 1.0 with the .Prompt and so on.
I'm 53 and have all the toys. I have an unlocked iPhone with no Data Plan. I can afford to have one, but refuse to pay the outrageous prices Rogers here in Canada wants.

Now if only there was a Senior Citizens discount on iPhone Data Plans :)

the $199 price point is only to ship more units and stick uninformed user with the increase in data prices, although at par and reasonable, an increase nonetheless.

I think its outrageous that the iPhone 3G is being marketed as half the price, when it clearly isn't.

I think this was a mistake on Apple's part. They should have had AT&T come on stage and talk about the new plans. Show that Apple lowered the costs, but AT&T increased the monthly.

Steve's comments about lowering the cost of the iPhone were definitely misleading.

I expect ALOT of people to be disappointed when they go to buy an iPhone and find out how much the cost of the data plan will be.

I don't think I know ANYONE outside of business users who have data plans on their phones, and everyone I have spoken to about the iPhone says that they won't pay the monthly cost.

I know there are a number of you who disagree, and thats fine. I think there is a certain number of people who WILL pay the monthly cost - I am one of them. But the majority of every day people won't.

I would buy two or three iPhones to replace iPods for my kids at Christmas time, but I am sure not going to increase my Cell Phone bill by $60-$90/month...

With a high data plan cost, Apple will be competing with the pool of people who are considering getting Blackberrys. With a lower cost plan, they would be competing against the Nokia's and Motorola's, and LG's...

I'm 15 and I like what I pay for my iPhone plan. I pay about $90 a month which includes unlimited data (including texts) and 450 anytime minutes. I'm fine with it.

I totally agree. Way to trick the 56% of people who said they couldn't afford it in the beginning. I mean this one is actually MORE expensive than the first, ridiculous!

Eh, poor people love buying stuff with credit, so paying basically the same price but over two years makes sense.

I'm 21, and the price is no obstacle to me.

27

I have been paying $50/mo for unlimited data/texts on my BlackBerry (not to mention all the other data phones before it) for quite some time now. I have no problem whatsoever with the data cost per month.

I have no problem with the upfront cost for either model either.

What I do have a problem with is the fact that At&t is saying there will be a "full retail" cost for those of us existing customers not eligible for upgrade, but they won't come out and say what it is. I also have a problem with the fact that I can buy any other phone they sell for full retail price and not have to renew my contract to use it. That is the benefit of paying full retail after all.

With the iPhone on the other hand, not only is At&t going to charge a "full retail" price, they are STILL going to force you to sign a new 2 year agreement.

That I have a problem with.
