Funny all have DVD covers to show the selection. I basically use XBMC movie preview thumbs.
But the movies are very organised. I try to repack everything into a single MKV with preferably 1080p 24fps moviestream, DTS core 1500KBs sound and one or 2 UTF-8 SRT subtitle tracks (Dutch and sometimes the original language) and chapters at the sweet spot of 8-14GB per film.
I trash all formatted subs, dubbed tracks and all other crap.
Most of the time I add my own subs in UTF-8 format as there is no easy conversion of formatted subs.

This is a screen shot of how mine looks - because I'm using iTunes 11 I can't show very many items. I too miss the slider to adjust the size.

In total I have 1,222 movies (although steadily going up as continuing to convert my DVD/Bluray collection as time permits) ranging in size from 600MB to 47GB (Blu-ray rip of LOTR: Return of the King) to 600MB, which currently takes up approx. 7TB. The movies are a mixture of DVD and Blu-Ray rips together with iTunes downloads. All of them stream perfectly to my aTV3's, even the 47GB one.

wow that is a ton of movies:eek:

Quick question....

I downloaded MetaZ for metadata editing. After I write the data and import into iTunes, I can't see any of the information.

Bigger question is when will I ever get to watch them :D May have to wait until the kids are gone and I'm retired.

Movie night with the kids when they are a bit older will be fun with me wanting to watch old '80's movies again and them screaming for Twiglight Episode 30.

Have you tried MetaX - it's what I use and I find it flawless.

i was going to start ripping blurays but i dont have the time so i decided to just buy movies on itunes.

I have to say, the ripping of the DVD's/Blurays was a huge pain in the a$$ and took about 18 months all up (a drive failure when I was moving from WHS v1 to WHS 2011 caused me some grieve and extra time), however I'm very pleased I've done it now that I've almost completed it.

The only things left to rip are my dvd's for the TV series 24 and to try and work out a way to rip about 30 blu-rays and a few DVD's the AnyDVDHD won't recognise (my Oppo blu-ray and PS3 play them fine).

I'm not sure my wife thinks its quite as awesome as you and I (well at the time any way) lol :D

I totally understand taking that approach, and a small number of mine in itunes are from the iTunes Store, however its the lack of control of the media and the fact that I don't actually own the item that stops me fully embracing the iTunes Store - e.g. I can't share the movie with friends and I can't leave it to my son when I'm six feet under (or not very easily).

well he could take over your itunes account. I just download everything i get from itunes and just store it locally instead of just leaving on the cloud

I do the same, it's just the restrictions etc. that annoy me as when I've paid for something I expect to own it. Also, the Blurays are better quality and often cheaper so no downside for me.

I tend to look at it this way... unless you're knocking on heaven's door (if you are, please give me a minute to pull my foot out of my mouth) by the time you'd leave it for your son, the tech will have probably changed so it doesn't really matter.

I hope I'm not :D and I agree that the tech will change, however the movies themselves will always be great :p movies so if my son wants to watch it he'll be able to.

At 47GB I assume it still has the lossless audio. How do you keep that from tripping up your Apple TV?

----------

the only thing that has me worried from buying movies thru itunes is the possible releasing of 4k in the next year or so

Wouldn't that keep you from buying ANY movie?

EDIT ADD ON:

Oh yeah... "Jet Jaguar, come down!"

Love following this thread...... just finished ripping all my DVDs/BRs and now I want to populate the metadata. I looked at MetaZ and it does provide some good info, but I find IMDB.com to have a much better database.

I plan to home share via iTunes from my NAS. My question is what do you populate in MetaZ for:

Movies - artwork, title, show, date, rating, genre, short desc. actors
TV Shows - same as above but under TV Tags what is best to populate?

Want the best information to display on my ATV3 (maybe a 4?)

I'd definitley fill in the epsidoe name, season no. episode number and the rating. Also, if it's HD then set that as well.

I would suggest you take a look at MetaX and then I also use Wikipedia for episode info and then use the built in Artwork Finder in MetaX for the artwork or use:

If you love imdb info then just use the tagging app called identify. All you need to do is enter the IMDB reference code and it automatically finds all the tagging info/artwork for that movie. Quick and easy.

Amazed at your collection size of movies. I am only up to about 375 movies total so far.

For a size of 7TB how do you have your HD's set up?

Here is mine, Mac-Mini with a 4TB Raid Mirror 940+ Movies and 50+ TV Episodes, attached to a 52 Inch Sharp Aqueous TV:

For a size of 7TB how do you have your HD's set up?

I'm running WHS 2011 and have used an old HP case that has inside it a new mobo and a 160GB SSD as the system drive and then 3x3TB WD Red Drives and then attached by esata or USB I have 2xSansDigital 5 Bay enclosures with a mixture of 2TB and 3TB drives and also attached by USB2 and USB3 I have 2x3TB WD external drives and 1x4TB WD external Drive. Will likely get a SansDigital 8 bay enclosure next and get rid of the external USB drives until needed in the future.

I run Stablebit DrivePool within WHS 2011, which duplicates the data so although I have 38TB of storage it is actually only 19TB because of the duplication.

In respect of TV programmes I currently have 361 TV Shows with 10938 episodes taking up approx. 8TB.

^ Nice that is a good set up. Ya I am able handle my collection so far on just two HDs, a 2TB as the main and then a backup one.
