The same can be said about the regular iPad and even the MacBook Air.
The rear compartment in my backpack is designed for a 13" Laptop, that's where my 2012 13" MBA resides, the iPad Mini slips into the adjacent compartment. The backpack remains light, comfortable, and assures I have the level of connectivity I require.

I've always preferred an MBA over my various iPads. Theres no appeal in trying to use a tablet in place of a computer. The current iPad 4, stays home. Working in the industry, my computer use requires just that... A real multitasking, fast, keyboard equipped computer with the requisite file system.

It looks fine to me. Now, doing this all the time instead of carrying a phone is an entirely different story. I guess it depends on your preference.

I don't plan on carrying my iPhone all the time anymore this could work for me.

I wouldn't want the mini to replace my iPhone. I just like how much more easy the mini is to bring with me than the full sized iPad is. I don't like leaving valuables in my vehicle, for example, when I go somewhere; but I like bringing my iPad with me on the go.

I carry a pack of cigarettes in my pocket, and they are actually more uncomfortable in my pocket than the mini is. (Not both in same pocket at the same time).

Hilarious. The weight difference between full iPad and Mini is about 300 grams. A standard *empty* backpack weighs several times that. The weight difference between full iPad and Mini in a backpack is negligible.

hilarious that you think by using grams as a measure of weight, that you think the difference is insignificant. we're not fools here

300 grams = 10.58 oz = 0.66 lbs . fact check - that's the weight of the Mini itself too so it's as if you are carrying over 2 iPad Minis.

i tried riding with the iPad 3 in my Camelbak. i noticed the extra weight over the many many miles that i go riding. besides barely fitting into the bag itself (i couldn't fit it in with the case i would have to put it into a large ziplock bag), i could feel the fact that's it's nearly 1.5 extra pounds on my back. that's as if you are carrying another 3/4 of a liter in your Camelbak.

the iPad Mini on the other hand, weighs just a tad over 1/2 lb which is NOT noticeable when that equates to .2L

the difference between carrying the two devices is like carrying an extra .5L of water on your back. if you have ever gone riding, you would know that's significant

You do realise the iPad 4 would equal 0.65L of water (not 3/4 of a liter) and the iPad mini would be 0.31L of water (not 0.2L)? Great way to twist numbers in your own favour.

So thirsty....

If you think of the difference as roughly a can of soda...it's not that it would make a bag unlift-able, but it would make it a little more unwieldy.

Tom

Um, so you think he's trying to fool you by using grams instead of pounds? You do realize that, for most countries outside the US, using grams is the standard measure for weight in the metric system, right?

Quite frankly, I wonder how it can possibly fool anyone. The relative difference in weight between iPad mini and iPad 4 remains the same no matter if you're using grams or pounds. It would only make a difference if one of the units used a logarithmic scale or something, such that the units were no longer proportional.

I think it depends on if you are used to carrying things with you. I am a hospice social worker and always have to have my binder with me anyway since it has my documents, notes etc. adding the mini has been no big deal for me.

I use it as a planner that is linked to my wife's calendar and it helps keep track of what I have going on. Also gives me something to do between visits or when waiting for someone. Overall, this is my favorite electronic device after my DSLR.

I was just confused by his logic and choice of words

Had to lift mini upwards about an inch to reach volume button (to snap picture).

You should hold it up to your ear and see what peoples reactions are...i bet people will come up to you and think you have a new product coming out....lol
I can't imagine that its comfortable. I never imagined putting it in my front pocket...you know a lot of these people went home and tried it, don't you. Cuz the next time I put jeans on i'm probably gonna test it out...:D

I absolutely adore my Ipad mini, and funnily enough, it's the reason why I got into Apple products in the first place.

I bought mine a few months ago, the portability factor was my main reason; it's small, yet big enough to comfortably browse the web, write notes, 'kill some spare tme' etc. For some, the Iphone might be good enough for all that, but I enjoy the size of the mini.

With a little sturdy case, I can easily fit my mini in my purse, and I don't even notice it going from A to B. I bring it with me wherever there is some Wi Fi connection I can hook it up to. I've noticed I also love the camera quite a bit. I've even edited some short clips in Imovie and had some fun with some special effects apps. I've used the Facetime function to talk to - and see - friends with Ipads living far away from me, and I've tapped into a few funny games just for the fun of it.

If I were to mention a few negatives, it would be that I prefer to type on a keyboard. The Ipad mini isn't impossible to use for that, but if you write a lot, I find it a bit hard. But for notes and all that it's excellent!

The other thing I miss is that the charger chord is too short. So it's a bit difficult playing around with it while it's plugged in. But I guess if you allow it to charge when you're doing something else, that won't be too much of an issue.

I absolutely love it, and my friend is even considering buying one in adition to her normal sized Ipad, because she is planning a trip to some exotic mountain and needs something super portable.

I agree the USB cord that comes with the mini is too short. I bought the apple USB power adaptor which comes with a longer power plug cord, same USB cord.
The one that comes standard with regular sized iPads.

But not nearly as hilarious as you thinking that using grams (an internationally standard measure of weight) is an attempt to "trick" you. Yeah, I know "in amurrikka we use pounds".

Except that it isn't. .5 liter of water weighs 1/2 a kilogram, which is 500 grams. Now I get that metric system isn't your strong suit, but I think even you can figure our that 500g > 300g.

And by the way - I do go bike riding every day (notice "rider" in my user id?) And when I do, I leave my iPad at home. I don't need to carry a 7-10" slab of glass with me everywhere I go.

I carry my mini with me everywhere. It even fits in my small handbag and its so easy just to pull out and use. On my daily commute I take the tube (subway) which is always packed I can easily hold my mini in one hand and use it. P

I'm pretty much sold on this thing as a home device but I'm genuinely interested in how capable the iPad mini is outside the home.

Back when I had my iPad w/retina I almost never brought it with me unless I was going to class or the library. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing but I'm hearing people say the mini size allows them to take it everywhere.

Those of you who own one, how is it used inside and outside the house in your daily life?

I bring it with me everywhere. The battery life is excellent. I have a white mini with lte. Fits in my front pocket perfectly, and extremely lightweight. Here's my current battery life on this charged, from 100%was only plugged into my computer for ten minutes to sync music. I use it for navigation and music while I drive. Music is mainly from slacker radio with some from internal storage.

I live in the United States, or casually America, not sure where this amurrikka you mentioned is.

100% certain that those who made fun of the Galaxy Note 1/2 as being to big are those who are cramming ipads in their pockets and saying its fine.

There is a difference between a phone and a small tablet. The former is not expected to be large while the latter is. I know you want to sound insightful, but the Note still easily fits in your pocket while the Mini does not.

There's a lot of arguing over what's comfortable in a pocket here lol. I'm pretty sure it won't be comfortable to me as I don't like anything in my pockets other than credit card, license, and a little cash.

As for what's comfortable to others, I could care less.

I'm considering the mini, I think it will suit my needs well and even if it doesn't the full size will still be fine. I'll still enjoy using the mini and if I don't I'm sure somebody will happily take it off my hands for a fair price.

To answer your question - not very practical.

The key thing is - you need a bag.

Actually you don't. Most guys and some gals do just fine in the back pocket. Works great with cargos. And there are vests and hoodies with inside pockets if that's your deal.

At work I'm running around set with a toolbag of tape, blades, rigging clips etc on one hip. Two phones and an iPad mini in the pockets of my cargoes, plus two radios and a camera monitor on my tool belt. Plus truck keys, sunglasses, Chapstick, sunscreen, sunglasses etc.

I do just fine.

It can be done, if you want to do it.

What I was thinking. Next time I buy new clothes, I am making sure they are iPad mini compatible! ;)i

I am sorry, but this looks like one of most ridiculous things ever :D Why would you do this to yourself? Why not just carry an iPhone 5? Do you hold this thing to your ear when making a phone call too?

You really need to chill. We get it, you don't like the carrying an ipad around, it doesn't work FOR YOU. But your opinion is just that, an opinion. Go find something else to do with your time other than trying to convince us that your opinion is fact or making snide comments.

That must be the biggest jeans pockets I've ever seen. I can't even fit my fiancés mini in my jacket pockets... Does not really look that comfy...

Maybe not, but I bet it's real fun when notifications are set on vibrate, especially if you're really popular.

Agreed. I could care less if it is comfortable or not for someone else, I am able to make up my own mind on such matters. The main point for the op is the mini is a lot more portable than the regular sized iPad. I have both, and the full sized iPad stays home most of the time.

I still would not want a phone as big as the Galaxy Note 1/2. With the mini I have the choice of bringing it with me or not, whereas a phone, I most likely always bring it with me. Would rather have a smaller compact device for a phone.
