If it s done when monitoring the temperature of the CPU... Is there any tool that can force the fan speed anyway?

One more question,
I suppose that the GT 120 512 Mo is quieter than the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 Mo. Anyone agrees or is it more or less the same.

I am focusing on the noise of the graphic board during IDLE time or office time (web browsing, writting doc.), not when playing 3D games where i am resigned to the noise:)

Out of curiosity, why do you need the MP to be completely silent? It seems kind of like chasing dragons

Because I paid $2,500!!......For just a tower!

Seriously, day two of my new Mac Pro. Obviously going from a dual core MBP to a quad has sped up Lightroom considerably, PS a little. MS Word, excel, access? Eh, not so much.

Fan noise? I can TOTALLY hear it. My fans have a cycle I can totally pick up in a quiet office. Waaaaaaawoooooooowaaaaaaawooooooowaaaaaaawoooooooowaaaaaaawooooooo. They must be ever so slightly out of balance. (I know I'm nickpicking, but its there). Turn on a little music and its gone though, just like my monitor hum.

Some people are just more aware of noise than others. If my phone was ringing and I was talking to clients I wouldn't notice.....

smcFanControl can actually do it, the GUI is just set up to prevent you from giving the command. There's some way to access the actual.....whatever it is....that talks to the SMC to adjust fan speeds, and by using that it is possible to set the minimum to whatever you want. I'd advise against doing it though, Apple's fan control schemes are usually set pretty low to begin with. (Lord Steve HATES computer fans, it has been well documented through the years)

I have both. I don't notice either of them. The machine is damn near silent when idle and doesn't pick up much when working.

I don't know any tool. On Macs , we haven't many tools for that. Most people want to increase the speed of their fans. I think you only would watch how quiet the Mac Pro could be, but after all you'll set the speed to the original because of the overheat.:)

I belief that the "WOAWOAWOAWOA" sound comes from the CPU Cooler/s.

smcFanControl increases my fans minimum speed, noticeably increasing the noise of the system.

Worked like a charm on my '06.. Not so much on the '09 dustbuster edition.
