How safe is iPhone with a frameless case?

Agreed, simply plan your drops ahead of time.

Make sure you select compressible materials. Plan the direction and trajectory.

You don't need a good case.

Bumper cases offer almost no drop protection. It may seem like the corners are protected, but they’re not. You need a dual layer case like the one pictured earlier for any safety.

Just like a bicycle helmet, you need two layers. With one layer, you’ll end up cracking something.
Just asked ChatGPT, it almost agreed!

I've been hooked on Pitaka cases now for several years. It's not quite as frameless as this but it offers very little protection. I haven't dropped my phone in a long time.

Those who do drop their phones or have kids, I usually point them to Spigen Tough Armor cases.

I'm surprised how many people I know want to go caseless and/or use their phone with a minimalist case today. Several people I know went Totallee and really like it.

That said, phones seem to be a lot more durable today than before. AppleCare+ and enjoy - that's what I do.

It’s a compromise you have to make as you cannot have a naked to the touch case and full protection. You have to look at your own lifestyle and assess whether or not your phone would be safe in its current case.

This is my case which obviously makes the phone a little heavier and bulkier but does provide full protection and peace of mind. I have had 2 bad drops, once on a hardwood floor and once on a concrete pavement and the phone, and the case, is still in pristine condition.
I can't tell if this is a piece of cement or a brick?

It all depends on how you use your phone, how careful you are and what your personal preference is, really. This is why opinions here might not be very helpful for you, as we do not know your personal habits, etc.

The case you mention could offer a minimum protection for your phone under the right circumstances, but if you need more peace of mind try finding a case which covers the back and all the sides of your phone completely. Some of these cases are quite elegant too. After trying a bunch of slim cases, I settled on Apple’s own (silicone), which snags the phone nicely and feels nice and soft in a hand, adding just a minimum bulk to it.

Seems quite safe, as long as the corners are protected and it has a screenprotector. My gf only has a glass screenprotector and while that shatters from time to time, it protects her regularly dropped iphone 11 pro. otoh, I don't like screen protectors, so I just have a case that protects the back and the sides/corners of my SE 2020 - as long as I don't drop it face front onto gravel, it's usually fine.

I once had an unprotected iphone 4 slide through a hole in my shorts pocket while i was running full speed and then it slid on gravel for around 3-5 meters and it had nothing but a dent on the frame and some parallel, shallow scratches you'd only notice in sunlight. While the glass on the phones got stronger, the phones also got heavier and the glass , so that more or less evens out. I also had my SE2020 lying on a desk in front of me, not touching it, when the glass on the homebutton suddenly developed a hairline crack while I was watching it (naturally, when I got an appointment and brought it into the Apple store two days later, the crack had widened a little and it was deemed "no hairline crack", so I had to pay for the repair.

So, naturally, if you handle it carefully and protect it with a case you'll minimize the probability of it getting damaged, but often it's just pure luck. I think iphones are much prettier without a case, though.

Like the poster above said, it’s pretty much pure luck.
I know people who have removed their multiple layer OtterBox cases… To discover a totally shattered back that’s been shattered for who knows how long, and they got the case at the same time as the phone.
On the other hand, some people just buy the $10 cases and still have a flawless phone years later.

There is no absolute safety. The iPhone is a tool to be used, at least to most. You will replace it in x amount of years. It’s not meant to stay forever.
And a case is a form of insurance. Everyone needs to assess their level of ‘coverage’ they feel comfortable with. For me, a basic/standard Spigen case along with a screen protector meets my needs so much so that I have not purchased AppleCare + for almost 10 years and it’s been alright. I put out about $25 for the case and screen protector and save $130 (or whatever it costs these days) by not purchasing AC+.

I’ve had the occasional drop and have changed my screen protector a couple times but my phone has been protected and I estimate that I saved the cost of a new phone almost 2x over.

And I could care less what color my phone is or how glossy or shiny it looks. Like you said, it’s a tool to be used.

I don’t use a case or screen protection personally. I have AC+ if it gets real damage. Looking at my 12 Pro display, with the display off, I do see small scratches/scuffs. They don’t impact the display if it’s on, which is all I care about.

I guess my point is - everyone has to decide for themselves what is important. Personally, for me it’s utility - I don’t care about keeping the phone “pristine,” just functional. Of course I don’t have children in the house; that would likely make me get a case.
