I've heard of the plastic 3G iPhones being painted but not the first generation phones. (I'm sure it can be done though.)
The seller has owned the phone since new and doesn't reference painting it, rather he simply states it is "rare" for being black.
Stranger things have happened on eBay, for sure, but does seem interesting.
This means that the housing was replaced. I would steer clear.
This seems like housing has been modified, not random iPhone Apple let slip.
Is the shape of the first generation built so a 3G black housing would fit?

I'm actually hoping the next gen iPhone switches back to an aluminum casing, and I hope it comes in black and white aluminum. And the piece of black rubber on the bottom should be silver or white on the black iPhone and black on the white iPhone.
I asked the question through the eBay system to the seller if the phone is original and he responded to me, "the back was professionally replaced".
