My new iPad has a screen protector because I am using it a lot more while traveling and put on job sites with construction work in progress.

My last iPad was naked because it mainly got used around the house and it never got scratched.

Anecdotal evidence means nothing. Just because someone else (or many someone elses) goes naked without a scratch means nothing regarding whether or not you'll get a scratch going naked. You need to determine what precautions you're willing to take to avoid scratches. Polling others isn't the way to determine that. No percentage of naked users is a guarantee that you won't get a scratch.

Research via the countless screen protector threads here and see if one sounds like it would suit you.

Always consider the source. The iPad screen certainly can be scratched by many more materials than just diamonds. Searching around would quickly verify that as not everyone with a scratch has one due to a diamond.

Either you lack imagination or you're unaware that there are screen protectors that won't degrade image quality.

You are telling him his opinion is "anecdotal evidence", when he's just stating an opinion. You then go on to state your opinion as if it's fact, when it is just again anecdotal.

Guess what: no one likes you.

We have three iPads in the house. All three are unscratched. All three don't have screen protectors. One is a year old, one is six months old, and one is nearing a month old. They're used daily and taken around places during the day.

There is not one scratch on my iPad2 and I use it all the time. In addition, my nieces and nephews play games on it quite a bit. I clean it with a small microfiber cloth that I bought from an optometrist. No screen cover, a Case-Mate Gelli on the back. When I take it out of the house I slip it into a Targus A7 sleeve and into a leather bag (no padding) with keyboard, camera connection kit, stands, etc., etc.

I bought the Gelli and Targus the day after my iPad arrived with every intention of getting a more protective/ high end case but quite frankly have no need for it. I like the simplicity of it as is, and if it wasn't so slippery, wouldn't even have the cover on the back. It is one durable, beautiful tablet.

Scratching the glass is hard, scratching the oleophobic coating is easy. I let my sister use my iPad 1 for a few minutes and bam scratches on the screen from her fingernails.

I've never been without a screen protector since. I currently have an anti fingerprint one on my iPad 3 that works a treat and feels nice and silky. (It's also crystal clear)

Story of my life, mother used it for a week, scratches everywhere.

$1.50 for a screen protector that doesn't bother me one bit in terms of feel and looks put my worries to rest. I am easy to please and glad I am that way.

I've got smudges under my screen glass...... Live With it?

Anyone else has smudges under the screen glass?

Cheers

The screen is very difficult to scratch. You would almost have to be trying to scratch it. Sure, there will be someone who will claim that a scratch came out of nowhere, but I have never babied the screen on all 3 iPads I've owned. I have used the smart cover since day one and have cleaned my screen with my shirt and any towel around and never had a single scratch. I have dozens of friends with them and I'm not aware of a single person with a scratch.

I use a Skinomi skin on my iPad 2 and I cannot tell it's there. The screen still looks perfectly clear and still feels exactly like glass. I've used many different kinds of protectors over the years on everything from a Handspring Visor to cell phones to iPods and this iPad, some were terrible and just installing them caused scratches and "fogging" and some were better. The Skinomi skins I use currently have been the best. The one I have on my iPod Touch has been on it for years and still looks new.

But they are degrading how ipad feels in touch.
Ive put screen protector on mine iPad screen but took it out after one day. I couldnt stand that it doesnt feel so smooth and sexy anymore (but to be honest it is packed into case and sleeve, so ive shouldnt hurt it by accident)

My main worry has been females, my wife included. They tend to wear diamonds on their fingers.

iPad screen

Bought my iPad 2 years ago when they first came out. Also bought the Apple black case which was offered at that time. Use it everyday, and the screen looks as good as the day it arrived. I wipe it down when it needs it, but I simply haven't had an issue with the screen.
