Most iPhones are sold subsidized. I'm talking about unsubsidized iPhones vs unsubsidized iPod touches.
There's nothing to compare in my opinion. That's the Apple's policy regarding iPhones - they jut don't want you to buy contract-free iPhone. Of course they give you that option, but for the very high cost, which is unnacaptable for most people, that's why they opt for contract version - probably it's more money for Apple in the long term from AT&T and other carriers.

And one more thing - people do whine about US iPhone and iPod touch prices, but forget the fact Apple devices are way more expensive in other countries. For example in Poland iPod touch 8gb cost 345$, 32gb cost 460$ and 64gb cost 615$! iPhone4 16gb model without a contract can be yours for 1335$! So compared to that and most other countries, US prices are a bargain, and ppl still whine about them. I dream for US Apple prices here in Poland where I live.

Holly! ****!!!!

At that price it's worth a trip to Singapore. There you can purchase a few devices, getting GST (VAT) refund and sell them in Poland, the profit for just an iPhone will pay for the flight ticket :p

And that's actually what many people do :) Just look for ebay auctions - you'l find there multiple iPod touch 4gen offers from US residents with much higher prices than 229$, 299$ and 399$ respectively. They''re not to attract US customers, but customers from abroad like Poland etc, where official prices are way higher. So this ebay offerings are a ripp off to americans, but still attractive to customers from abroad.

There is in my opinion. They're essentially the same device with about $20 worth of parts difference; yet one sells for $300 and the other one for $700.

I would argue with that, think it's much more than just a mere 20 bucks. We should find out soon enough, though, when iSuppli reveal iPod touch 4' parts cost. They said iPhone4 production cost is 187$. Also, we should keep in mind it's without any other costs - R&D, distribution, marketing, etc.

It's an estimate; maybe $30 max.

Estimation based on what? :) I'm not saying they differ greatly in cost production values, but so little?

You know the truly sad part is, there's no reason these days why we need any of this voice + text + data plan horsesh*t when everything comes down the same pipe anyway.

Take the iPad 3G for instance. You buy the iPad 3G at the Apple store no strings attached & just sign up for pre-paid data at a decent rate plan & you're done with it. No contracts, cancel whenever the hell you want.

But they wont let them do that with iPhone/iPod Touch, even though its basically the same device (just smaller). Its stupid & just meant to F the consumer.

You have my deepest sympathy when it comes to prices for Apple products in Poland! I can understand why a lot of people import them from the States as I did with my iPod Touch as there's no way it should cost so much especially for the 64GB version even with VAT here in the UK!

Now I understand. I've seen a 8GB 4G end at $280 on eBay, and now I know why. I have the deepest sympathy for Poland customers (so you). +$115? Wow.

The 4th gen Touch is too thin. I had to send mine back for a bad power button. They sent me a box. It had a pre-cut foam cutout to allow placing defective iPods in for sending back. I punched out the one closest to fitting my 4th gen and placed it all in the box. Didn't look secure. I closed the box, then tipped it on its edge. Opened the box again to find the iPod had slipped between foam layers and was now against the side cardboard. The weight and wedge shape simply wouldn't stay in the center void. I put it in a baggie and taped it to the foam. Hopefully that will keep it there during FedEx's trip back to Apple.

I went through the same process with my defective first gen. It was thick enough to have no problem staying in the center of the box.
