The way I'm doing it tomorrow, and someone please tell me if I should do otherwirse...

Activate iPhone 5 on the new line, call AT&T just tell them to swap numbers (put my number on the iPhone 5 with the nano sim already installed) and then put my current iPhone 4S on the new number with the microsim that's already installed in my 4S.

Not sure that's what you're supposed to do based on the 5 or so threads around here.

Does activating it set the plan chosen for that line in place? If that's the case I don't have any intent on activating the phone as the line it was upgraded on.

I used my dad's upgrade and he has a dumb phone with no data plan. I attached the cheapest plan onto the iPhone 5 to preorder it from Apple. My thinking is I take my 4s, the 5, and my dad's dumb phone to the AT&T store and let them do their work. Or call and let them know and never activate the iPhone 5 under my dad's line and go straight to mine. This all is too confusing. Not looking forward to this tomorrow.

I do not want any data plan under my dad's line to show up on the bill.

you dont need this upgrade swap. just remove the nano sim of the iphone 5 then put the micro simcard(cut it to the size of nano sim) from your 4S. Then put the nano simcard(use a nano to microsim adapter) from the iphone 5 into the 4S. Thats it :D

I don't think this will work this time. The 5 has all new LTE plans so if you use the 4S SIM, you might not get LTE, only 3G.

From personal experience from the 3G, 3GS, 4, and 4S, if you ordered your phone through Apple, you can't do it.

Apple orders have always been pre-assigned to the number you upgraded.

AT&T orders can do it with no problem at all.

I can tell you when you try, the AT&T rep will claim they switched it and go ahead and activate it.

Well guess what? Activated and it was the original upgraded line. My folks had to go without a phone for a few hours while I had a friend get them new sim cards.

There has not been any proof/source stating AT&T changed this.

So pretty much:

Apple Orders - No upgrade swaps available. You will have to activate it and go in-store and get new sims.

AT&T Orders - Upgrade swaps no problem at all.

you can still get LTE. LTE is signal dependent NOT nano simcard dependent.

I get that. My point is that it is plan dependent. If you just put in the SIM from the 4S (cut) and don't call AT&T to change your plan, you may not get LTE.

If you're going to call AT&T anyway, why not just activate the new nano-SIM anyway?

I had hoped that I could avoid the at&t store by doing the method that the OP posted till I read this comment. I read in other threads people have said this same thing.

Guess i'll be going to the at&t store tomorrow. Oh well, i'm going to need a case and screen protector anyway.

You're right.

If you do not have a LTE plan, your phone will not connect to it. You will just get 3G and eventually get a text and email from AT&T nagging you to call them to change to the proper plan lol.

Yea it sucks and time consuming. Knowing it'll be busy in the morning, I'll have probably have to go after lunch hours sigh.

I plan to upgrade swap my unlimited data plan over to the new iPhone 5. I don't have to change my unlimited data to get LTE, do I?

It will connect to LTE. I been swapping my att micro sim with adapter and LG nitro LTE and i can still surf the net with LTE speed of 35mbps on the nitro(using the 4S sim) without calling att.

First off, I am not talking about sim cards. What plan are you on? I bet it's a LTE plan. As always, you can downgrade phones but you can't upgrade phones.

For example, if you have a LTE plan, you can use an iPhone 4S or HTC Inspire or Galaxy S2 with no issues whatsoever.

If you are on a 3G plan and you try to use a Galaxy S3 or LG Nitro, you won't be able to connect to the LTE network. It'll be 4G and not 4G LTE.

It's a fact. You probably didn't notice AT&T switched you over. I bet you're on a LTE plan.

Im on 4S Unlimited data plan $30 monthly.

Att

Ok...just got off a live chat with ATT customer service...he said that there is no way to do the upgrade swap over the phone or computer....he indicated that I will have to come to the store with the new phone and the phone that I am swapping with to execute the upgrade swap...he also said that the info posted on the website is outdated and does not take into account the new nano sim...I am really bummed...don't want to battle the lines at a store tomorrow....

This is absolutely false. I have never purchased from ATT. Every iPhone came from Apple and I did the swap each year over the phone w/ ATT

can someone confirm this...

I opened a new line on my account, so can I just take the 5 to the store and have them add it to my main line?

Currently I still have the 4S. I want to put that on the new line. Actually I have plans on selling that phone and use a dumb phone on that line (making it $10 a month extra).

If yes, I'm sure I can call att this weekend and dump the data and unlimited messaging on the new line (had to add these features to pre order)

Is it any easy as it sounds?

Lets see how it goes then.
I also ordered from apple and I want to do an upgrade swap without having to deactivate the sim inside the current 4S that Im using as the upgrade line.
Dont feel like going to an AT&T store on iphone release day.

Heres the kicker....the ATT rep said I have to have the phone I am swapping the up grade with....not sure why...but said that having the IMEI number is not good enough....this is really a pain...my wife will have to be without her phone for day....

I don't believe you. As soon as you connect to iTunes, you had to enter the number you upgraded! When you try to enter a different number, it won't work. I bet several members here can vouch for that experience.

One member was even told to enter the original number because the rep claimed it won't activate because he/she did the "swap."

Guess what happen? iTunes activated with the upgraded number and his mom was SOL. He had to go in-store.
