No, I want to maintain the LPCM, DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD passthrough (7.1 - since I have a 7.1 set-up in my home).

Not sure about that then. I haven't seen something anything that allows 7.1 passthrough yet. I think I have seen where as they downmix them is all.

Makemkv beta expired and there isnt a new one. Batch encode errors out cause of trial expiration but i believe you are still allowed to use Makemkv regardless of beta expiration (at least until our of beta). Any ideas how to fix?

You uninstall and re-install while it's still in Beta to fix it.

tahitibub! This is something that I might add in future, but for now Batch Encode is designed to select only one audio track. You should be able to use the custom settings for selecting more than one audio track: -a 1,2,3,4,5

The HandBrakeCLI Guide should help if you're new to setting custom args.

Hi Mac.Jedi,

Thank you very much for your answer. I've already tried this command, but the problem is to select the correct audio tracks (i.e. french and english for me) for each movie ...

I hope you'll be able to add this functionnality (to encode 2 differents languages automatically) in the future ... and also for the subtitles !

Many thanks for all your good job !

Regards

Auto mount ISO?

I have a ton of my Blu-Rays in .iso format. Is there any way to have it mount the iso and encode from that or do I just need to keep "un-isoing" them?

External Blu Ray Reader

Guys, currently ( as in Year 2011) what is the best external Blu Ray reader/player available to attach to a current model iMac for best performance. Have quite a lot of Blu Ray movies I'd like to put on my home server.

Thanks
Mike

I have had no issues with my LG WH10LS30 and would recommend it to anyone ( of course this is a burner but you can get the reader equivalent if necessary). Just grab this and any sata enclosure and you should be golden.

If anyone could help me, then I'd appreciate your time. I'm trying to use the Batch Encode automator service to encode an mkv file to an m4v file. I have the four applications installed and referenced in the Batch Rip - Batch Encode (Finder) workflow, the Batch Rip folders are created and referenced, and I have selected to use the Universal preset for DVD(1) and Apple TV 2 preset for HD (720p). The checkbox next to HD(720p) is checked as is the Enable HD sources checkbox.

Upon executing the script I am left with one 480p m4v file and what appears to be the original mkv file. I was hoping for a 2nd 720p m4v file as the notes indicate there should be. Is there something I'm missing in this process? If there is any further detail that I can provide, then please let me know.

Thanks!

Let's see if I can help.

First what is the mkv file of DVD or BD?

Second the Batch Encode will encode the same content twice if set up correctly. The first two selections are for DVD's only. The last two selections 720p(HD) and SD are for BD encoding only.

So given that, no matter you would have only ended up with 1 encode based on what you said you have selected.

Thanks for your quick response. The MKV file is 720p tv show content. The output encoding I am getting is a 480p m4v file as I mentioned despite setting the preset to Apple TV 2. Ideally, I am only interested in a single 720p m4v file, but I can't seem to generate one with this workflow despite my settings...

First thing I would do, is go into the Automator and check the verbose loggin, so you can see what the encoding process is looking at when trying to encode. Then post the log file here so I can look at it. then we can go from there.

Here is the text of the log file. It appears that it is taking the 1280 x 720p content and resizing it to 720 x 400 despite selecting the Apple TV 2 preset.

Ahh, I think I discovered my issue. I need to provide a custom SD setting for (HD Source) to Handbrake as neither of the other three options match my source content and the Apple TV 2 pull-down preset for HD (SD) content is unavailable.

I am by no means an expert at this. However in your log file I see several items.

[07:50:06] Width out of bounds, scaling down to 720
[07:50:06] New dimensions 720 * 400 (hence lower resolution encode)

In Automator if you checkmark HD(720p) and select ATV2, you will be fine.

However I can't see what is tripping it to go to lower resolution. I am sure some of these guru's around here might see it. It's says 1280X720.

You only need the custom HD(SD) if you want two encodes out of the one MKV file.

I believe what was happening is that it was looking for a Video_TS.ifo or Video_TS.bup file which is an indicator of DVD or BluRay source material. I believe the first three encode types in the workflow: DVD(1), DVD(2), and HD(720p) pertain to the workflow finding these source files. Having not found one with my source material, it checks to determine if it is a stream file. It determines that it is and uses the last of the 4 encoding types: HD (SD). Only there is no Apple TV or Apple TV 2 preset available for this encode type. Perhaps it makes little sense to re-encode an mkv file at 1280 x 720 to an m4v file to the same resolution--I'm not sure. In any case, one file gets created as none of the first three encode types match my source content and the HD (SD) would require a custom setting to provide the encoding I want.

I am not sure that is corect. I Rip BD's and that creates a MKV, then I run the encode, so there is no Video_TS.ifo folder/file to be had.

the DVD(1 and 2) encode looks for the Video_TS folder or a mkv file. It will encode either one. In the options you can choose to create a mkv when ripping.

The HD and HD(SD) look only for a mkv file I do believe.

Hmm...well my logic fails me and I'm at a loss as to why simply setting the DVD (1) encode type to the Apple TV 2 doesn't produce the desired m4v output. I am able to workaround the issue by setting a custom HD (SD) setting however. It would be interesting for my personal understanding to determine why the workflow isn't behaving as one expects in this instance if anyone has further expertise.

Thank you.

Well the DVD(1) should have anything to do with this. The two encoding types DVD and HD have nothing to do with each other.

it's about the input file and what it contains.

So if you set the HD(SD) the file outputs what resolution?

Using this custom setting for HD (SD):

-e x264 -q 21.0 -a 1,1 -E faac,copy:ac3 -B 160,160 -6 dpl2,auto -R Auto,Auto -D 0.0,0.0 -f mp4 --detelecine --decomb --loose-anamorphic -m -x b-adapt=2:rc-lookahead=50

I get 1 output m4v file that is 1280 x 720.

Sorry, to me that makes no sense. You are selecting auto for resolution.

Hopefully one of these experts of the command line and the file will jump in.

Getting a resulting file of 1280X720 says that the file can be encoded that way. But if you have the HD(720p) and it drops the resolution down to 720X480 makes no sense to me.

You're right. As this is my first experience with this encoding automator workflow, I am confused by how the workflow is setup as well. My initial impression was that I could select the desired preset for the DVD (1) encode type, mark the checkbox for Encode HD Sources and get an m4v output that resembles the preset selected. This hasn't been the case, and so I would welcome any expertise anyone may be able to provide to shed some light on what is causing this.

Actually what you are saying is the workflow, with the exception of Which profile it will use. Checkbox for Encode HD means that the workflow will use the last two HD(720p) and HD(SD) for HD quality encodes. The first two are only used in 720X480 source (i.e) DVD's.

I have a DIGISTOR external BD burner.

http://www.digistor.com/Products/Blu-ray-Burner

It works very well and will rip a Blu Ray movie at about 1.5x normal run time on my iMac. It's nice and small too - it's designed to be used with laptops.

The only issue I've had with it is powering the thing. When on the single USB connection the internal battery will run down when ripping multiple disks one after the other. If that happens, it goes totally dark and has to be reset and trickle charged before re-use.

They give you a 2-cable connection - one for data and one for power, but that uses 2 precious USB ports, and I found that it would kill my iMac if I had to reset the drive. Literally, the screen would go straight to black and the Mac wouldn't boot again until the drive was disconnected. DIGISTOR reckon this is a power fault on the Mac (yeah, right), but they sent me the power adaptor (for free) and this has cured all of the problems. I now have it on direct A/C power plus a single USB connection to my iMac.

Bottom line: great drive, not cheap, but get the A/C power adaptor.

Ahh, I think I discovered my issue. I need to provide a custom SD setting for (HD Source) to Handbrake as neither of the other three options match my source content and the Apple TV 2 pull-down preset for HD (SD) content is unavailable.
Not sure if this helps, but, I upgraded my Handbrake after installing the scripts. Well, I encoded a few blu-rays, and they came out at DVD resolution. The solution, for me, was to go hit the drop downs again. I had selected AppleTV2, and the new handbrake had them as AppleTV 2 (note the space). It was a subtle change...but if it's not your issue, it may help someone else :)

What do you do about naming TV show files when illegal characters are in the name (I want to add the tags based on the show name)? Specifically, I am trying to tag up 'CSI: NY' using 'Batch Rip - Add TV Tags'.
