LS* means Samsung

I definitely agree with you. I came from a samsung lcd mid 2011 mba and sold it for a mid 2013 mba. The new one has lg lcd which I thought was washed out at first but definitely brighter. I thought about returning it but I decided to try the macrumors profile. Boy did the profile made it so much better! I also think it looks way better than the samsung when calibrated. The samsung has a gradient issue that the lg doesn't have. I did return my air but not because of the lcd but for the scandisk ssd. My current mba is lg display and samsung ssd. I am very happy now!
Calibrate the screen to your liking. Otherwise, use the profile referenced in the following site:

I completely understand why people dislike the stock calibration on the LG screen, especially if it is next to the Samsung panel. I will concur with everyone here and say that once calibrated, the LG screen is MUCH better.

I don't think this makes the clearest sense.

You're stating that the LG screen on default settings, is basically more or less not bearable, especially next to a Samsung.

Then suddenly, you change RGB levels and change contrast and it is now a better screen than the Samsung? Still the same screen really.

but yea, the Samsung can be calibrated as well. But on default it is already great according to most people.

But hey whatever makes you happy. Majority of the people prefer Samsung, but there are always going to be people with different opinions.

There's no right or wrong. It comes down to personal preferences.

But I've read up a lot of threads here where people go and return their Airs for having the LG screen. Hell, there was one person who said that they would live with a slight dent on their new macbook air just so they can keep their Samsung and not risk getting a an LG replacement.

I've yet to read a case where someone returned a Samsung screen in hopes of scoring an LG screen. :p

Well that's because those same users read the LG vs. Samsung threads and jump to the conclusion that there is something wrong with their LG screens. Those same users will take a gamble and will keep returning their mba in hope of scoring a Samsung screen. Completely ridiculous! Just because Samsung screen has better calibration from factory compared LG doesn't mean it's a superior screen. I agree with you though that it comes down to personal preference. But to say the LG is defective or lemon is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!

Where from ?

Maybe not the best choice of words, but many people seem to be dissatisfied with the LG displays...

Many people on these forums are a bit on the... Odd side. Most would not be able to identify an LG vs Samsung display by looking at them. They just heard a stranger on the internet say Samsung was better. Don't be that guy.

What a difference of opinion...all the way from "I can't tell any difference between the two screens." to "LG?!? My eyes! It's BURNING MY RETINAS!"

Despite the subjectivity, truth is somewhere in between. Without a custom calibration, the LG does look washed out compared to the Samsung. And I think Apple's aware of this....I went to the Apple Store a couple of times and ran the terminal command on the store models, and (surprise surprise) they all just happened to be Samsung displays. Both times.

I still prefer the Sammys, but the mac rumors calibration really, really narrows the difference. So much that despite my OCD, I'm not tempted at all to return my 11" LG in order to play the lottery again.

Same reason all HDTVs on store displays are set to a 'vibrant' factory setting. This is because most consumers who knows nothing about proper calibration think this is appealing and proper. Apple will do its best to make it's products on display look as vibrant as possible so much that even the store lighting adds to this. Of course they will use the Samsung over LG because the factory calibration is much more vibrant.

obviously, the default LG screen settings is what passes Apple's standard ISO or similar.

If it was as simple as adjusting the contrast, LG and/or Apple. would have gone through with it ages ago. Why would they continue to push an unsatisfactory product to their consumers? Clearly, either Samsung doesn't have the capacity to produce the screens entirely, or they just don't want to be fully dependent on 1 producer - Samsung... which is quite the norm in any production industry.

You guys play around with the RGB and now feel that it is now superior. Truth is the naked eye isn't the best at judging color accuracy. You've likely compromised some viewing quality that even you don't know about.

I am not sure why LG's screen looks a bit washed out. There is obviously a small difference between the 2 but with proper calibration, the LG becomes a much better display compared to its original RGB settings. As far as which screen is actually better, this will depend heavily on the preferences of the user. Some people just get an idea in their head that Samsung is better so that is how they see it (confirmation bias). I happen to believe that the LG screen is excellent once properly calibrated. As long as I'm happy, it is what it counts.

Well said. This debate will end when apple finally upgrade the MBA screens.

Hey guys. My 11 inch arrived this afternoon. It's an LG / Toshiba SSD.
i7/8GB/128GB since I don't need a lot of space.

I have to say, I really like the LG screen. I tried the macrumors calibration and the notebookcheck.net one just as well, they are rather similar. I didn't like what they do, I prefer the bright base look, I must be weird.

The Toshiba SSD has less write speed, but random speeds are a little better which yields slightly faster boots/shutdowns.

I am so very happy with this little computer.

Got my 11.6" Air on Monday. It's got the Toshiba 64GB SSD and the Samsung LTH116AT01A04 display. So far I luv everything about it. I find the display to be great! I'll only use the SSD when surfing the net. There's no applications on it. But, when I'm in a hotel room, I'll use my external Seagate Hybrid (Fusion) 500GB SSHD drive.

Are you sure it's Toshiba? Is yours a 2013 MBA? Haven't heard of a Toshiba SSD so far on the 2013. AFAIK, it's only Sandisk or Samsung...

How do you find this info? I'm curious now lol

^^^^How to find out the manufacturer of the display is spelled out clearly at the top of this page (Post #26). To find out the manufacturer of the SSD:

Look at System Information, under Storage - If the entry for APPLE SSD is followed by SM, then it's the Samsung, if it's followed by TS then it's the Toshiba.

and APPLE SSD is followed by SD lol..:s i give up :)

^^^^In the Terminal application. It's located in the Utilities folder that is in the Applications folder.

Attached is a pict of the storage information I explained above.
