This wouldn't be so bad if there weren't a stroke on the circle. I decided to just leave it as a circle because everyone is making their avatars work for that.

Thanks to recent changes, the stroke is gone and proper blended-in transparency is now possible. A good step forward

Look. I'm one of the people seriously affected by the change in the avatar policy. On mobile, the round avatars look fantastic (retina, smaller format) but on desktop it's neither here nor there for me. The best option would be to make it a user CP setting and be done with it.
