Incidentally I would really love to get a new BMW M5. I've spent ages reading up about how amazing it is, and I really need something better than my current car!! I haven't had time to visit my local BMW dealer, but if I tell them how a M5 will let me do my daily commute 10% quicker and how the new 8 speed auto box is so much better than the 6 speed box in my current car do you think they will give me one for free?

I've owned an M5. Don't worry, you're not missing much.

Simply ask for a Leica with several lenses. Leave catalogues around showing all this in all its splendor. They will discuss this with worried, hushed voices.

Then, let them know that the 3100 would be fine, as it will be.

Then, when you open your present and find underwear and a new backpack, you can plot your revenge.

This post reminds me how much I hate gift-giving at Christmas... I loathe compulsory consumerism and people expecting gifts. Your "only" gift? You are complaining that your parents don't want to shell out $500 on an expensive gift for you? Just be thankful for what they get you, or that they get you anything at all. If you really want one, I'm sure you will find a way to pay for it yourself.

Sorry, I'm a scrooge.

thats cause he probably already has all the video games but cant fit them in his sig

Look, I don't know the OP.. but going by a lot of what I see on the forum I'd suggest that he is nowhere NEAR spoiled. Not even. Can we let that rest now? We could talk about asking for a brand new DSLR being sorta unrealistic (especially given the circumstances which we don't really know anyway), but even then...

I believe the other alternatives are great suggestions though. :)

+1 on this one... maybe sell some of the gadgets you DONT use to supplement the cash that you want your parents to shell out? Show them that you REALLY want this since you are also trying to provide part of the money..

It's funny you say that because at the age of 32 I'm doing just that, selling some of my gadgets to get a Nikon D7000. I've grown out of the whole "import scene" and have sold my wheels, exhaust, intake, LCD monitor, old BB, misc. stuff like that to get money to buy the camera. If you really want the camera and you are passionate about it and just don't want it to tinker around with then show them some responsibility on your parts. Just don't follow the Sony, I wanna dog commercial, that wont work.

I buy all my gear used. All new gear only has a 1 year warranty anyways. My 1Ds is from 2002 and my lens is from the 1980s, and still does pretty well..

Great shot!

I agree, I have a 10D that still takes great photos and is constantly used and abused. I would recommend that the OP have his parents look for used equipment and buy it from a reputable source. I can certainly see why, as a parent, I would not simply go out and buy my kid a 400 + dollar camera.

Christmas is coming up and I really want a DSLR. Like a lot... [...] I already have a camera (point-and-shoot type) and can take okay pictures with it. I said I love photography, and I need a better camera. He still hasn't agreed. How can I convince them to buy me one present, the DSLR, for Christmas.

I've skimmed the thread, so maybe I've missed something, but I've not seen anything that lays out the following:
  • What specific limitations is your existing camera imposing on your photography?
  • How, specifically, would a DSLR remedy those limitations?
  • Why is a DSLR the only remedy for those limitations vs something like a Canon SX40 or Nikon P500 or similar?

Answer these questions and you'll have a much more solid footing on which to base your case.

Just incase anybody cares, I go a camera, the Canon T3! Thanks everyone!!

I guess it shows your parents love and care for you too. Funny enough I nearly posted on this thread a couple of weeks ago to say I thought they had bought you a camera already ...... but hey the most important thing is that you got what you wanted.

I hope you got your parents something lovely to remind them that you love them too.

Enjoy your new camera and please post some photos so we can see how you are improving. Good luck.
