Turning this off is the equivalent of being anti-vaxxer. Poor snowflakes.
I applaud Apple for making it defeatable, at least. My car has a lound beep and “don’t forget your phone” alert every time I turn off the car and you CAN’T disable it. And alerts if if’s below freezing out. And alerts to remind you to wear your seatbelt.

All really stupid things I should be able to turn off.

TLDR, at least we can.

Thanks for the reassurance that this was thought through already. I was looking at the diagram Macrumors included in a recent post where it shows "Bob is positively diagnosed for COVID-19 and enters the test result in an app from a public health authority" So, perhaps it was an overly simplistic outline of how this is to work

Nobody is pointing out the very real possibility that individuals are going to say they have a positive test result when they haven’t even been tested. Some will do this because they simply want to freak out other people or be a nuisance. Others will do so because of their political agenda, because they wish for the lockdown to be extended. The whole process is based on the honor system. This will not work as intended.

From what I’ve read, you can’t just say you had it. It has to be a verified case by a doctor etc. If anything, this will underrepresent the amount of people who caught the virus since our country can’t seem to figure out how to test ourselves...

I think less than 10% of these people read the fact you also have to download a supported app for anything to be reported... since 3/4 of folks are freaking out about updating their OS.

Pretty ridiculous thread.

You were doing ok until the unnecessary, inflammatory last sentence there. We don’t mass test and contact trace for the flu that kills tens of thousands of people every year to little fanfare. This is elements of the government and industry getting a chub with a new opportunity for control and surveillance under the ruse of an “emergency”.

No it’s not. Nothing about this lets apple or google or anyone else control or surveil you. Read the spec.

Yet. Until this is normalized and the next step leads to the next step and then onto a point that can no longer be controlled.

  • There's a vaccine for the flu. It's widely available and often free.
  • Flu infections reoccur yearly, with the same guidance given out regarding hand washing etc. that is probably not followed widely enough.
  • Per the CDC, only 37.1% of adults got a flu vaccine in the 2017-2018 season, a decrease of 6.2 percentage points from the previous flu season [1].
  • Mass testing/contact tracing doesn't make much sense for the flu when it can be controlled with a vaccine and proper hygiene.
  • COVID-19 is very different from the flu.

Yeah, no. I don’t have a tin foil hat, however I’m also not a sheep. I also accept the fact that I’m likely to get the virus regardless of what I do, as are most other people. I worry about the most susceptible people, obviously, but I also telework full time and mostly stick to myself. Once public opens back up we are fooling ourselves if we think the odds of exposure will be low and I don’t support more tracking regardless of how good the intentions are or how anonymized it is claimed to be.

They’ve taken 0 steps. This system is as innocuous as a fart app. Neither one sends any information to the government. By your theory no apps should be allowed, because at some future date they could be modified to do something nefarious.

What a dumb take.

Yep. We are actively creating those dark, dystopian futures we've all read about. There will be a point in the future where we will look back not things we didn't question now...and ask ourselves what the hell have we done?

Patriot Act is a good example. That...like this...was supposed to be a temporary thing that helps us. It was supposed to expire in 2005. It still exists today. Permanently. And EXPANDED. And in many cases...is used against you. History has given us many reasons to be skeptical of certain things. Anyone who thinks this API is going to be removed when this situation passes on...is kidding themselves. Fear is being taken advantage of. That won't play out well for us in the future. The US in particular, has a proven history of taking "optional" and "temporary"...and turning it into "REQUIRED" and "PERMANENT".
You nailed it. I teach classes in Risk Management. One book I always recommend to my students is "The Science of Fear".

This book is broken down into chapters with each one addressing the "merchants of fear" - people who gain from inducing fear in others. The chapters include politicians (if my opponent gets elected they will ______), insurance companies, news programs (new danger found on playgrounds, details after this commercial break), etc.

The only people peddling fear are people who are claiming this technology somehow tracks you or anything about you, and who claim that any information about you is sent to anyone.

"No drop of water thinks it is responsible for the flood".
I never claimed this technology, in its current form, is tracking anyone. I have even said in other threads that I have no doubt Apple is doing this with the best of intentions. What I am more concerned about is that this technology is just another step down a path to a destination where I don't want to go. It normalizes the idea that our phones are useful to other people for other things I did not intend when I purchased my phone. It certainly isn't the first step in that direction nor is it even close to the last step, it is just another step.

I'm guessing the next step will be some employers and/or insurance companies "encouraging" everyone to voluntarily put the app on their phones. And by encouraging I mean mandating.

SPOILER ALERT: According to Governor Cuomo 13.9% of New Yorkers have had COVID-19, the VAST majority of the had mild to no symptoms. So if you live in NYC and are around more than 10 people over the next 14 days your chances of getting notified that you may have been exposed to COVID-19 is nearly 100%.

It is no step down no path. Your phone is doing nothing different than it does when it finds wifi hotspots. All the information stays on your own phone. If you don’t want to tell people you’ve been in contact with that you tested positive, nobody is forcing you to. All this does is tell you if other people have volunteered to tell people like you that they tested positive. Your objection is completely misinformed and ludicrous.

Ah, so you don't believe it then.

Specs and rules change. All. The. Time. Especially when it comes to Google and Apple.
If you believe it can all change at any time, why don't you believe they're tracking everything about you right now? They're probably listening to you through your phone this very minute.

No way distance estimates via bluetooth power levels are going to be even close to accurate. Expect many false positives. Lol

Why? ToF and power level give plenty accurate distance estimations. It‘s not like 6’ (2m in europe) is the magical distance where the virus says “you know, never mind.” 6’2” or 7‘ is plenty accurate enough.

Assuming that I care what the spec says, why do I want some app telling me that i was near someone who had it? If I stop at a stop light and the person 4 feet away from me in their car has it I would be kind of stupid to quarantine. What exactly is the max distance you need to be from someone to be told you are exposed? if you have read the actual spec sheet you surely know that number.

How about giving everyone a n95 masks and gloves, then enforce it at both the federal and state levels with $100 fines. South Korea made masks available to everyone for less than $2 a pop, but we can’t even get enough tests or PPE for hospitals. America got caught with its pants down and poor leadership = high death tolls and reduced privacy. BT is not secure enough, not when I can pull BT streams from passengers on my flights and all major airlines.

I don't want this feature on my phone, but I support what you say.
