I have had two occasions to call Apple Care about my iPhone. The first thing they did, before even asking about my issue, was to ask for my cell phone number.

I haven't used the Genius Bar at an Apple store for my iPhone, so I can't say for sure what they might do there, but I would assume Apple's official procedures are the same both places. And they do not service iPhones that aren't under an AT&T contract.

All that said, the poster who reminds you that you are trying to be a thief is correct - you should be ashamed of yourself for your lack of integrity. Obviously, that doesn't impress you.

how come the original owner of the broken iphone doesn't get it replaced?

1. Too lazy to get it replaced
2. Stolen
3. Broken due to human error

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say its either 2 or 3... The 3G should have warranty still as it hasn't been a complete year since its launch. So if the original owner wanted to make some money or was in the market for a different phone, he'd have the broken one replaced through Applecare IF it was broken due to faulty manufacturing - as he would get better money for it in a sale. But since he didn't, that means it wasn't broken due to faulty manufacturing OR it was stolen.

So what is it now?

Regardless, Apple ain't going to give you an exchange on it.

For the record I think the OP is a tard, for even starting a thread on how to jack Apple out of a new iPhone.

Before you start your sarcasm - think about it. They're not going to replace this iPhone if it

  1. Doesn't belong to the person who brings it in
  2. Isn't a legitimate iPhone (on contract - if its not, there won't be any warranty since it was never activated)
  3. Broken through water damage

They don't have the power to keep it, that was me trying to scare the OP into not lying to Apple (which other people picked up on, for some reason, you didn't and felt the need to instead, instruct the OP on how to get a replacement). However, if they see he is trying to exchange a broken phone, which doesn't belong to him, they can blacklist it, which means it won't work on any network within the United States - unlocked or not.

Also, this iPhone could be a replacement which has been exchanged once. If thats the case it will only carry a 90 day warranty - meaning Apple will not replace it, which is a possible reason the seller hasn't had it repaired or replaced him/herself.

If it was caused by user damage, this is another reason the seller wouldn't be able to have it replaced. Maybe he tried and failed and is now trying to pass it onto someone else cheaply for a repair-only job.

Either way, Apple won't touch this phone. And the OP is going to be extremely embarrassed, and will risk having the iPhone totally barred against all US networks.
 
I recently bought a used iPhone 2g (for my wife) for dirt cheap off craigslist. It was pretty beat up though, but functioned fine. We noticed there were small bubbles under the glass of the iPhone.

I left the AT&T Sim card in (the guy I bought it from didn't remove it), and took it into the Apple store. The genius guy asked me some questions and looked up the info/warranty for the phone. When it came up that I wasn't the original owner, I told him we had bought it used.

We ended up walking out with a flawless refurbished iPhone, which after the exchange, cost WAY cheaper than if we'd bought it directly from Apple.

So I can't speak for everyone, but that was our experience...

It goes something like this. You bring in your iphone which is stolen and ask if it can be fixed or replaced. They ask for the phone number and take the phone to the back room to check the phone number and serial number. When it's found to be stolen they call the police. When the cops show up they not only take the phone but they take you too. It's called possesion of stolen property.

No, I know he won't get it replaced for the reasons that you posted, just didn't know if you were serious about what you said (regarding the Apple holding iPhone).

What 90 day warranty are you talking about? I got my iPhone exchanged and I was actually given EXTRA time on my warranty (bought iPhone August, expires now in January 2010).

Apple doesn't get involved with stolen property being brought to the Genius Bar for service. At least that's been the experience posted on here by several Apple-owning customers that have tried to report their Apple equipment as stolen to Apple.

If apple knowingly hands a stolen iphone back to the person who brought it in and not notify the authorities, they become an accessory to the crime. Just ask any prosecutor.

Probably explains why Apple won't take note if you try to report anything stolen to them. They don't want the liability.

That's practically stealing. If the phone is under warranty, it will show up as being registered to your seller - so they won't be giving it straight back to you. You could have just stolen it and are trying to get it replaced before the user blacklists it.

They're not stupid - thankfully.

If you can somehow prove the phone belongs to you, and there is a genuine MANUFACTURING fault with it - meaning in the process of making it, something has grone wrong - and the phone doesn't have physical damage which is likely to have caused the damage, and the water sensors are in place, they will either exchange it, or send it away for repair.

Don't just buy a broken iPhone to get it exchanged and have a brand new shiny iPhone.

No wonder Apple products cost more when people like you are trying to rob the company.

Either buy a working one, or don't get one. Don't make us pay for your mistakes.


Ok let me calm all the Barnaby Jones, Top Cop members down and take apart the situation for the OP, First thing is "YOU MUST THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX" meaning the people asking why didn't the owner take it in for waranty, my first guess is because they didn't want to or were too lazy too. I see post all the time of people whining about a phone feature not working on a new phone, and instead of doing a waranty exchange they register online to forums and whine. My second guess is because he said SOMEONE SPILLED WATER ON IT. So really the THIEF is the one selling him a DEAD, NON WARRANTY COVERED phone. And he's is just NOT smart buying it, I mean do you really want an iPhone that bad? NO MMS, NO A2DP Bluetooth, NO Zoom or Flash on the camera, etc. etc. AND BEFORE ANYONE ASK, YES I DO OWN AN IPHONE 3G.

As for the legal stuff, WOW, alot of you watch WAY TOO MUCH TV, in real life you walk into an Apple store with a phone that is not in your name the assumption is you are the persons friend, neighbor, spouse, brother, in-law, aunt, uncle, grandpa, cousin, soccer coach, etc, etc, BEFORE THEY THINK YOU STOLE THE PHONE. I mean would he be the first person to walk into an Apple store with a phone not in his name, I guess you never took anything in for your wife or vice versa? When you did, did they think you stole it?

Also something being stolen is a very interesting situation, cause you cannot just say something is stolen and get someone sent to jail, you have to prove that you owned it (AND YOU DIDN'T STEAL IT) then you have to PROVE that the one the other person has is the stolen one, then the PROSECUTOR, if it goes that far, will have to prove that HE knew it was stolen when he bought it and blah blah blah.

In my opinion he is not stealing, if I buy something from someone that they say is broken and they don't want it anymore. I buy it, investigate and find out it's under warranty and I get it fixed or replaced under warranty, how am I a thief for them being negligent or lazy or naive? Or maybe they just didn't care too, just becuase person A is crazy about the iPhone does not mean person B will be.

To me it is silly for you all to call the guy a thief when they are just trying to save some money on his purchase. I see more jealousy in the responses than anything. So answer this question what if the seller takes it in and has it warranty replaced and then sells him the phone, IS THAT STEALING TOO??? It's the same situation.

The reason they don't take note is becuase there is a thing called a prank or a jilted lover. They know your phone number and could know your serial number, they know you are going to the apple store or not, either way, and they call the Apple store and say my phone was stolen, here is the serial number. Apple records it, you walk in and they check their REPORTED STOLEN LIST, your serial number is there, they call the cops, you get arrested, goto jail, then if you're lucky they find out it was a prank or you get your name cleared or whatever. So after court cost and a lawyer and a couple of days in jail you are able to prove that you bought the phone and whoever called was lying, guess who gets SUED. That's why they don't want to get involved, they would have to devote too much time investigating the validility of the claim that the person who called really had a stolen phone. People for whatever reasons do at time try to get others in trouble for no reason. That's why when citizens try to report a single person in the HOV the person cannot be ticketed unles the cop saw it.
