This isn’t just a “current health climate” for many Apple customers. I, and many coworkers, wear surgical masks for many hours every work day. We are hanging onto our 8+ iPhones and will not upgrade until TouchID is reintroduced.
FWIW, the new SE is a really nice phone, with TouchID.

I thought when Apple first brought Face ID out on the iPhone they said it even works if you have sunglasses on , (which covers part of your face)?
It can see through the glasses, it can’t see through the fabric.

I hope Apple is listening to this market potential.

Just to piggyback on this fact, I suspect there will be larger populations around the world who routinely wear face masks in public settings for the long term. This is not going away in the next year or two. Face ID with a truly secure PIN alone will be an inconvenience. I wonder if this changes Apple's strategy for re-introducing an alternative biometric option. Maybe it's easier for Face ID to just get better recognizing us with a face mask.

How to Quickly Unlock Your iPhone When Wearing a Face Mask

(Pro tip: Use an iPhone SE or iPhone 8)
I would have jumped an SE2020+ if it would have been released with the SE2020. Would have possibly gone with 8+ except Apple discontinued, and everywhere else was out of stock.

Takes a pandemic for Apple to realize faceId is not superior to touchID?. I have it, and I HATE IT, this is the whole reason I have not purchased a new Ipad. I have no choice on iphone, but I really want to have touchId and faceId, why I have to have the worst?. Now we are using codes as 10 years ago!. Now this is progress?. BRING TOUCH ID and keep faceId if you wish. Asian phone have screen sensor or a sensor on back or on the frame, is that difficult for you Apple to "innovate" a solution?. Your solution is basically disable faceId by configuration or by a sowftware patch!!!. I guess Tim does not uses a face mask, ever.

All I have to say here is Fingerprint sensor under the screen. Work on it Apple.

Somehow I've always suspected that Face ID would eventually be a bigger hassle than it's worth. We are truly in that time and place now. And other expensive phones do not have this problem. This is the problem when you put all your eggs in one basket. Apple has backed itself into a corner with its own snobbery.

Is anyone selling transparent masks that are still effective at protection? Is that possible?

This could make Face ID verification possible while you are wearing such a mask, but it would be even more important to let people see your expression when you talking (from a safe distance).

Just another reason I still prefer Touch ID.

And how would such a mask not constantly be fogged up?

It could be worse, I have a Note 10 with an under the screen fingerprint scanner which doesn't work (about 1 in 5 times at best) but luckily I can fallback on Samsung's version of Face ID which is insecure but that's less of a concern as it doesn't work reliably either.

And at this point with the glove wearing, mask wearing public (at least in the NY metro area), touch id is not all that reliable either. It's much easier to pull the mask down to authenticate than to remove the gloves.

Touch id has always been an issue with cold and or sweaty/wet hands. If this temporary situation with face id and masks is it's worse problem, it's in a good place.

In the current health climate, many people are wearing masks that cover their faces when going outside, visiting stores, and other tasks, and Apple's iPhones that use Face ID do not unlock when the user's face is obscured by a mask.

With this in mind, in iOS 13.5 beta, Apple has streamlined the speed with which the passcode pops up when a mask on the face is detected, making it easier to get into an iPhone with a passcode when Face ID fails.

So when you swipe upwards on the Home screen to unlock the ?iPhone?, this action immediately brings up the passcode interface if your face is covered by a mask.

But until that version is widely available, here's a list of your other options.

Adding an Alternate Appearance to Face ID?

Some users have tried adding an alternate appearance to Face ID, but with little success. On the whole, it seems that while Face ID can learn to overcome items like hats, sunglasses, and scarves, the chances of this working for most masks are slim at best.

Even if you do succeed in getting it to detect your masked face, this likely reduces the security of the system altogether.

Quickly Get to Passcode Screen

If you're using a version of iOS that's earlier than iOS 13.5, you can actually get to the passcode screen faster when you swipe up to unlock your iPhone.

Tap the Face ID text in the center of the screen and you won't have to wait for it to scan your face and fail - you'll immediately be prompted for the passcode instead.

Of course, the best way to use an iPhone with a mask is simply to turn off Face ID altogether and use a passcode instead. The following steps show you how to disable Face ID for just unlocking your iPhone.
How to Turn Off Face ID for Unlocking Only

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Face ID & Passcode.
  3. Enter your passcode when prompted.
  4. Under Use Face ID For, switch off the toggle next to iPhone Unlock, and any of the other use cases listed that you don't want to use Face ID with.

After carrying out the steps above, you'll be able to unlock your iPhone immediately using your passcode.

Of course a good iPhone will support both FaceID and fingerprint ID!

FaceID is nice but fails too often, even without a mask.

Face ID fail. Should've provided both Touch ID and Face ID options instead of forcing Face ID. Better yet, license iris scan from Samsung.

Touch id has always been an issue with cold and or sweaty/wet hands. If this temporary situation with face id and masks is it's worse problem, it's in a good place.

FaceID issues are not temporary for a large number of professionals who wear masks at work. If I could double tap the crown on my AppleWatch to unlock or use a password on a website on my iPhone, the problems with cold, wet, or gloved fingers and a mask over my face would be circumvented.

You need to use Apple Pay while you pull your patients teeth? :p

What other material is clear besides plastic or glass?
That's my question, whether it would ever be possible, now or in the future, to have a translucent fabric that would allow some light through but no virus droplets. Just in case, I'll watch for one on Kickstarter!

A facemask covers a lot more of your face then sunglasses, also, Apple probably trained the software for sunglasses, not for masks.

I reckon it's just a clever kluge by Apple. Making this a "feature" for when people wear masks, yet, those who do NT have FaceID-enabled phones were used to entering a pass code anyway.

Makes people wearing masks, think its something special.
