Apple on Thursday began rolling out a new Apple Music feature on iPhone and iPad that alerts users to new albums, EPs, and videos from artists included in their music library.

The alerts show at the top of the Library tab in the Music app, and given that they relate to content that's available in Apple Music, they're likely to be welcomed by most subscribers to the streaming service.

But even if you don't subscribe to Apple Music, these alerts are still pushed by default to your device's Lock Screen and Notification Center, and may quickly become a source of annoyance. Whatever your preference, the steps below show you how to enable or disable these new release alerts.
  1. Launch the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Select the For You tab.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Toggle the switch next to New Music to suit your preference.

Alternatively, you can turn off all notifications from the Music app by launching the Settings app, selecting Notifications -> Music, and switching off the toggle next to Allow Notifications.

It's great that they have finally added this sort of notification, but how hard is it to just put a "follow" button next to an artist in apple music browser, so I could be notified of only those artists that I'm a fan of? Seriously...

My iPhone was NOT on by default.

Received one of these alerts yesterday I thought it was a bug because I don't subscribe to Apple Music. Seems kind of desperate of them to send these ads to us.

I really don't like how Apple is pushing Apple Music. I already have all the music I want in my library. I don't want streaming. I don't want to pay a never-ending monthly charge for something that isn't absolutely necessary. Leave me alone.

Tim wants to make sure you're a valued dollar sign, erm I mean customer. Gotta keep that stock price up a few dollar a month services now that most of the world is likely to forgo 1000 dollar iPhone upgrades this year....

I turned off Settings->Music-> Show Apple Music, hope that fixes it.

Then turn it off. You have that power.

The Ecosystem isn't designed with you, specifically, in mind. Many people — like myself — actually like the convenience of adding music instantaneously and getting notifications when artists I actually like release music, since many artists have releases drop now with no warning. You are shaking your fist at a cloud, just turn off Apple Music if you don't want it and go inside. The cloud won't bother you anymore.

What does “Show in Library” do exactly?
It gives you the option to see those notifications when browsing your own music as opposed to when browsing the streaming service. If you only want to see these notifications when looking at Apple Music, leave your settings as-is. If you want to be able to see if artists in your own library have new music while browsing your own music, flip that switch.

Options are nice.

Any way to pin the New Music Mix that gets updated weekly to the top of the recently added?
No, as you add new music to your library, it moves down in the sequence added, But it will always be in the top slider in "For You". Or you can just tell Siri to play your New music list and you won't have to pin or tap anything. I rely on my "Favorites Mix" almost religiously so those are the methods I rely on.

So this will only work for artists in your library? I typically don't like to add anything to my library, if I don't actally own it. I only add non-purchased music to playlists.

So will this only alert me of artists that I actually have in my library?

My only real gripe might be with Siri, but I don’t know, is that disabling cellular data doesn’t stop Siri from attempting to stream things unless explicitly instructed not to.

This is great - but how do I stop Music from auto launching every singe time I get into my car?

I was just wondering the same thing! Any ideas?

There was an answer a few post above yours, but I believe if it is OFF, you’ll receive a regular push notification that an artist you like has released a new album. I get these every once in a while. I can click on the notification to then add to library, or do it manually later when I get around to it.

This Show in Library setting is new to me, but logically it sounds like turning on Show in Library will just have the new album show up in your Apple Music library. This sounds convenient if you‘re an Apple Music Subscriber. So when a new artist does release a new album, you’ll receive a notification, but you can even just dismiss it because they’ve already added it for you under the artist in your music library.

I suppose the splash screen is rolling out gradually even though the feature can be turned on from Music notification settings...? Has anyone seen the splash screen in their app?

Also, hasn't "New Music" notifications already been around for a while now, and it's just the option to see them in your library that's new? I seem to recall getting notifications once in a blue moon for new releases. I hope this feature pushes notifications for all new releases. And maybe in the near future, they'll add the option to customize which artists we receive notifications for.

This is what I was referring to. I maybe received two or three notifications during the past years that "Artists and Shows" notifications were enabled:

BTW — the instructions for enabling/disabling this from the article are missing a step:

  1. Launch the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Select the For You tab.
  3. Missing (Click on your Account icon/Photo in the top right corner)
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Toggle the switch next to New Music to suit your preference.
