I'll believe it when I see it :) If it does come out then I'm sure we can get version 1 extracted

He's thinking that the app checks if there is a VPN connection on the iPad. If the connection is done on an iPhone then tethered to the iPad it wouldn't see a VPN connection on the iPad.

So I had my friend try it and iphone doesn't seem to be able to connect to VPN and do mywi at the same time. VPN disconnects after mywi connects and won't reconnect after.

PPTP vpn on my android doesn't work with my firewall so i can't test it either

Just thinking...

Are most of the people who are trying to use this app on Long Island?

If this is the case would the following work?

Have someone who has version 1.0 log into itunes on another persons iPad and buy the current version of the app (Free obviously) again. Then put a copy of the 1.0 app in that persons iTunes account to replace the 1.0.1 version. I know it is somewhat possible to share apps this way between family members but not sure it will work this way.

I updated by mistake without backing up the 1.0 version so I am willing and able to test this possibility if someone who has a working version is willing to try as well.

Any thoughts?

its not going to work with new version. but it will work if you install version 1 with whoever account login who authorized version 1. problem with that is nobody is going to give you their itunes password :)

I am talking about ....

meeting someone in person who has the 1.0 version and having them log into iTunes on my iPad long enough to install the app and then logging out.

Kind of an underground app sharing scenario requiring an actual meeting.

I'll buy the lunch :)

I'm in Brooklyn. Do you drive?

In glen cove, long island, so iPad would have to be re synced on their comp?

This is how I think it needs to be done..

I tested this with another free app (Overstock)

1. Synced my wife's iPhone 4 which has Overstock 1.8 with her iTunes account
2. Copied app to shared user folder
3. Logged in as her on my iPhone >settings>store
4. Installed newer version of app over wifi on my phone (Overstock 1.8.1)
5. Synced my phone with my iTunes account - Overstock app shows up in iTunes
6. Disconnect iPhone from computer and delete app from phone
7. Delete Overstock 1.8.1 from iTunes app window
8. Drag Overstock 1.8 .ipa to iTunes app window and drop in
9. Re-sync phone to iTunes and Overstock 1.8 installs onto phone
10. Disconnect phone and app is installed and runs fine

Side benefit is app requires wife's password to update so for the Optimum app it will be impossible to update it and break the VPN again.

Further thoughts

Obviously the Optimum for iPad app will need to be on removable media to get it onto my computer which would be steps 1 and 2 above.

I will need to have the itunes account on the computer i will be using to do this, which is just a simple copy the itunes folder into a temporary account on that machine. (Not the usual machine iPad syncs to).

I should be able to PM this afternoon.

Ive got a VPN running on my router rather than my mac, but I cant connect from ip's abroad..... anyone got any ideas why?

are you using version 1 or version 1.0.1 of cablevision app?

Coleman and others - this temp sync will work and as a side benefit you won't be able to update in itunes :) I tried it few times with my friend and shared app works just fine. Only issue I see is CV closing this hole by disabling older version of software from accessing the network. until that happens your idea will work

Forgot one thing. There is no need to drive or go anywhere. This can be done remotely via teamviewer application. Its free and works fast.

Kalex - please give more detail for using TeamViewer

Just need to know what devices are needed to make it work (Computer to iPad, iPad to computer or computer to computer)

Just want to be sure of what you did

Thanks

you connect ipad to your computer. then sign out of itunes, launch teamviewer app. then someone with version 1. connects. transfers the file to your computer then sign in with that info and sync it. the only thing u have to be careful is not to allow ipad to sync apps and stuff as it will overwrite what you have in there.

first sign out from itunes account. sign in with new account for the version 1 app u need. add the app to itunes. connect ipad and make sure that all auto sync features are turned off. then switch to apps tab under ipad and check only cablevision. sync and then sign out of itunes and sign in with your account. that should work i think. also backup backup backup before you start. just in case

Well this is interesting...and has implications

As an experiment I downloaded Angry Birds Rio HD to my iTunes account and copied it to the shared user folder.
I logged out of my user account (not iTunes) on my Mac and logged in as my wife. I dropped the .ipa file into her iTunes account and the app synced and works fine.

I never had to be logged into iTunes with my login at all to get the app transfered.

Thoughts on how this is possible? To easy?

Are u and your wife using same account in itunes? It depend son itunes not your mac login. When u opetn) itunes are both emails same?

I must be dumb...

The reason they are working is because the iMac is authorized for all of those accounts under (Store>Authorize this Computer).

I created a brand new Apple ID on another mac, downloaded a free app and copied it to the iMac in my wife's itunes account. The only way I could get the app to load on the iPad was to authorize the iMac to that new Apple ID. If I deauthorize it the app gets deleted on next sync.

kalex - are you working on an iPad 1 or 2 and is it JB?

Mine is not JB

When you did this with your friends iPad is that computer authorized to your apple ID?

Is it possible that some free apps don't enforce the DRM somehow?

I am feeling that this may not work after all:(

I'm on Ipad2. i didn't test it with ipads and cablevision app but i tested it a while ago on iphones using beejive IM app. I bought the app and gave it to my friend who had to sign with my itunes account to get the app installed
