Weird I have iOS 17 and this feature is not there at all in my remote app... I have the last 2 gens of 4k TV remotes too...
Are you running tvOS 17? If yes then you’ll have to wait for the remotes to update themselves to the latest firmware. I’d imagine keeping them on a charger would help speed up the process.

I wonder what this will do to the great battery life of the remote. I don’t loose my remote that much that I’d like to give up any battery life.
An AirTag lasts all year with a tiny coin cell battery. All this does is listen for routine pings from the remote, and when one is detected, tells the remote to keep pinging at faster intervals. As the signal strength gets stronger, that means the phone is closer and you'll see it in the app. If you never use the app to find your remote, then there are no changes.

I've been using one of these cases for a while now, which makes the remote slightly larger and tackier (i.e, not so slippery), so it's less likely to fall between cushions AND when you say, "Hey Siri, find my remote," it makes a noise so you can locate it.

RIP Siri Remote case + AirTag market:

(I bought this, love it and will still leave the case on because the case is bigger and prevents this thing from getting lost in the couch)

As someone who suffers from Howie-Mandel-level OCD when it comes to germs, things of this nature are a no-go for me. If I take my phone out with me, it stays in a specific place in my house. I don't interact with it, since glass is one of the more favorable surfaces for the flu/COVID virus to live on. So if I've taken my phone outside the house, and I have to interact with it, it's basically wash hands right after etc. Not very pleasant lol

Thanks for that. Seeing this was not how the remote was built I figured it would be implementing a different way of allowing you to locate it. But it sounds like you know how it works so thank you. ;)

I would have hoped for an auto destruction feature, so if somebody steals my remote I can savor revenge once and for all.

I currently have a lost Apple TV remote... going to try to update the tvOS and cross my fingers it will push out the new firmware to the remote, wherever it may be...
Well it's been about 6 hours since updating to tvOS 17 and my iPhone 12 Mini is not offering the "Find" button shown in the article. (Do I have to update my phone to iOS 17 also? Not sure if I'm ready to do that.)

My lost silver Siri remote with lightning port is on firmware 0x83 with 79% battery, says the Apple TV Settings app. It's gotta be within bluetooth range since my apartment is small. I'll report back if it ever gets updated.

In the meantime, love that they made the TV home screen icons smaller with 6 on a row instead of 5! And glad to see my HomeKit lights and outlets still seem to be working fine. I was a little nervous about updating the TV which is my home hub, with all the new Matter stuff they've been adding lately. I haven't tinkered with Home settings after running the update and it all still works as it did before.

In the first weeks of COVID when nobody knew how it was being transmitted and people were washing their groceries and disinfecting shoes, I was washing my phone. No OCD here, just being careful but learned that it’s ok to literally wash your phone with soap and water. I still have that same iPhone 12 Pro Max and despite dozens of washes, it’s still working almost 3 years later.

Back on topic, I charged my Siri remote to 100% and have left it alone, to cover the idea that it’ll only update firmware with enough battery and when not in use, but I’m still on version 0x70. My guess for a third condition for firmware update is that it does it overnight when it’s less likely someone is going to pick it up and want to use it.

Lost remote didn't update overnight, still on firmware 0x83 almost 24 hours later. After reading the article it does sound like iOS 17 on the phone is probably also a requirement for this to work. Looks like this might take a little while.

Yes, you must have iOS 17 on your iPhone(s) or iPadOS 17 on your iPad(s).

I agree with you: I am loving that Apple made the TV home screen icons smaller. I really think it makes the home screen look much sharper, but obviously that will come down to personal taste for others if they like it or not. Curious what others think about the new layout?!

Also, FaceTime, on the AppleTV 4K is amazing!!

Good luck with finding your remote!
