I'm new to this too. Do you need something like AnyDVD to rip commercial pressed DVD so the copyright protection will be bypass? Or handbrake will take care if it?

A very timely thread...I am in the middle of a huge project in which I am converting my VOB files for use on my MBP and iPad.

Last year, I ripped my hundreds of DVDs to hard drives (VOB files) and am now converting all the movies to H.264.

Handbrake rocks!

I use DVDShrink or DVDFab to rip the DVD itself. DVDFab has a paid option to convert directly to iPad, as well, saving a step.

I, however, want the VOB files, as well, for use in WMP on my PC and on my TV through the Popcorn Hour.

Once you've HandBraked your movies to your computer, no need to sync them to your iPad and clog up the limited storage with several GB's of movie files. Just use an app like AirVideo or ZumaCast to stream them from your computer to your iPad via wifi or 3G.

Working with HandBrake Now

Question about presets. I clicked Apple TV preset for the first one. Streamed it downstairs to the tv. Good enough for me. Very pleased with this. But does anyone have any advice on tweaking these presets for better quality? I obviously understand how to make the video better but does anyone have their own presets based on the Apple TV preset that seems to really fine tune it? My 1:48:42 long movie is 1.07 gb. I'm experimenting now with different audio. Audio I understand. Video - not so much.

Help me 3soteric........slowly, ha ha!!

if you have the movie files on the computer already (such as avi/xvid etc files) then install CineXPlayer on your iPad. It will play the files natively without need to convert them at all.

All you do is connect to the computer, load iTunes, click the iPad then the apps tab, select the CineXPlayer app, then look in bottom corner of the page to add movie files.

Works a treat on both iPad and the iPhone

I'd recommend AVPlayerHD. I've tried a number of different players that play AVI (and other) format files, and I think the AVPlayerHD is certainly one of the best.

Once you've got AVPlayerHD on your iPad, there are several ways to get your videos into it. You can use iTunes, the internal "wifi transfer", or "open in..." from other apps.

Here's some quick instructions for using iTunes.

1. Plug your iPad into your computer (this also works through wireless syncing, if you've got your iPad set up for this, though, naturally, it takes longer to transfer files over wifi).
2. In iTunes, click on the iPad icon in the left side-bar.
3. Now, across the top of the main part of the window, you'll see tabs/buttons that say: Summary, Info, Apps, Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, iTunes U, Books, Photos. Click on "Apps".
4. Scroll to the bottom of this window, where you'll find the File Share area.
5. On the left, there is a list of apps that support file sharing. On the right is an area that lists files associated with the selected app (this area should be blank at the moment, as you won't have an app selected yet).
6. Find and select AVPlayerHD from your apps list in the File Sharing section.
7. Drag any movies you want into the files area and wait for them to finish copying over.
8. Disconnect your iPad.

Done and done.

Hope this helps.

In addition to the just-mentioned AVPlayerHD, the following players also have an excellent DivX / MSMPEG4 decoder:

Just an add on to this -

After I rip my movies via handbrake I use a program called MetaX to add all the metadata - like actors/directors and even cover art.

It isn't as good as it once was - I think the developer dropped support - but it works for me. I'm sure others here probably have a different program that works just as good.

The moved on to Meta Z

I ripped my entire Bluray library of 200+ using Pavtubes blu ray ripper and an LG blu ray player that I picked up for $89
