Wrong. Same names is the way to go. iPhone will pick the one with the best signal automatically this way.
Actually, wrong, because best signal doesn't automatically correspond to best performance. 2.4GHz networks have further reach and penetrate walls more easily which probably means you'll get more bars of signal (pretty BS measurement, but for illustrative purposes it'll have to do) if you have a large domicile - but for that very reason it also leads to more crowding in the airwaves when different networks overlap.

You also have only 3 completely discrete channels in the 2.4GHz band, leading to even more crowding, especially as some people unwisely use those channels that overlap other channels, causing even more crowding.

Unless the signal is so weak you can't get a reliable connection at 5GHz you will almost always get better performance in that band than at 2.4GHz (due to things like more capacity due to higher frequency, and also more discrete channels, none of which overlap each other.)

The apple watch doesn't connect to my home wifi when the network is hidden
I have the airport estreme , when I make my wifi visible then the apple watch can connect

Is there a workaround to this ? I like having my wifi hidden

I don't know if there's a fix for it, but you don't gain any security by using these two items: I used to really believe in both of them, but did a lot of research and have given up on both as useless. The first is the hiding of the SSID (network name) and the other is the use of MAC/hardware address security lists to restrict your wifi network.

Both are major PITAs to ease of use and don't stop anyone that knows anything about wifi networks.

Just my two cents. :)

Just wanted to thank the OP, just renamed the 5GHZ band on my Airport Extreme and now connect my iPhone to the 2.4GHZ band and this has dramatically increased my range at home!

I was getting really frustrated about lack of range at home and general slow behavior. Found this thread and realized I was on bluetooth at home 100% of the time. Now I shut off bluetooth at home and the watch works much better. Thanks again!
