The latest YouTube update has enabled support for Dynamic Range matching via the 2nd Gen so provides HDR without being forced to do so.
Can you give step by step to 'Tell'? Have latest ATV set to 4K HDR...Does it have to be 4K SDR? In YouTube I see no mention of 4K in 'Settings' ? Note: using 'free' YT; not subscription . Version 2.06.22.00/web_20220726_10_RC00. Thanks ....

Since 99.9999999% of the videos are SDR, just play any video and your TV will switch to SDR automatically if you enabled content range matching.

Anyone know why viewing YouTube in HDR doesn't mention it on your TV settings but only on the YouTube app itself when you select different resolutions?

TV: Sony Bravia A90K

My TV is a 2018 LG C8. On the built-in WebOS streamer, the C8 indicates with an on-screen notation that the video is HDR or Dolby Vision for both Prime Video & YouTube.

On the 2021 Apple TV 4k both Prime Video & YouTube are not on-screen indicated as HDR or Dolby Vision when the video description says it is HDR or Dolby Vision. Other apps such as AppleTV+ do indicate on screen that their videos are HDR or Dolby Vision.

Where can I find what version of Youtube is on 2021 Apple TV 4k? I could not find Ver 2022.07.31.

I have YouTube version 2.12.01 that was released on August 14, 2022 pursuant to the app info in the App Store on my Apple TV 4K, second generation. But when I play A video that states it is either 4K or 8KHDR, the settings dialog on my Sony TV does not show that it is playing at HDR. Normally, when I hit the settings button on my Sony TV and bring up the dialog box on the right side of the screen, an HDR source will show HDR in the top right corner of the settings dialogue. That is not happening with YouTube on my Apple TV.

Further, when I pull up the stats for nerds, it is showing the color SBT 709 and not BT 2020. So the question is how do I enable HDR through YouTube on my Apple TV. Or, is it actually playing but that the TV is not showing it as HDR.

Could it be that the version dated August 14 as broken HDR on Apple TV? I’m not sure I understand what’s going on with this. I do have the premium YouTube subscription. Not that should make a difference.

I had to use the settings in the photo to get HDR & DolbyVision to work properly. When set, Stats of Nerds work properly even though my LG doesn't indicate the video is HDR.

The first line "Enable DolbyVision" simulates everything into DolbyVision. I like real DolbyVision & HDR.

I find it strange that the TVs themselves (LG, Sony) are not indicating the YouTube content to be in HDR, as they do with every other service. Can anyone explain why? Are we sure that native HDR content is being passed from YouTube onto our actual displays when "Format" is set to "4K SDR" and "Match Content" is enabled? I ask as an owner of the 1st ATV 4K and it wouldn't be worth the upgrade if this doesn't work. Note that today Apple just announced a 3rd gen ATV 4K with support for HDR 10+

Are you sure your TV shows an indicator for HDR? Some TVs will only show the indicator for Dolby Vision. Youtube has no control over that popup.

Good question, and yes, it has an indicator for every type of HDR content, whether that be Dolby Vision, HDR10, or HLG. Several other forum posters have noticed the same thing. I suspect that when these TVs detect any kind of HDR signal, the indicator is displayed. I doubt it has anything to do with what the app itself.

My Sony Bravia A80J will not automatically pop up something to indicate something is in HDR. I have to open the main Picture Settings to see the HDR badge. And if the show/movie is in Dolby Vision, I have to use the quick picture settings shortcut to see if a show is in DV - if it is it will show DV Bright or DV dark. Unless I am missing something.

Thanks for sharing. When you do go into your TV settings, it sounds like you are seeing the same thing I am experiencing, which is that your TV is not indicating HDR content.

That has nothing to do with Youtube. Not all TVs popup when changing to HDR. Some have an option. But the previous poster verified the change by looking at the video settings to make sure it says HDR.

Thanks, I realize it has nothing to do with YouTube. I think you misunderstood the previous poster's comment. If you check his post from August 20th, he indicates he's not seeing HDR reflected in either his TV's video settings or YT's stats for nerds.

thanks for posting this. I had it set to 4K HDR and didn’t understand the ramifications.

Still cannot get it to work for me, perhaps because I have the 1st generation ATV 4K. I'm going to try upgrading to the 3rd generation and see if I have any better luck. Will report back!

YouTube HDR isn’t compatible with the 1st Gen ATV4K.

Came across this while trying to figure this out for myself. I have an LG C2 with the 2022 Apple TV 4K, and it does not appear to be playing HDR videos correctly.

It's weird. Some play properly and some don't. I don't think there is anything you can do to fix it. I subscribe to amcouple of so called 8K Video channels. After checking out a number of them to see if they truly play HDR, I am down to 4 that do play HDR video. The rest don't even though they say they do.

If you want to see a channel that does play HDR, search for Eugene Belsky. His videos play in HDR on my ATV 4K second gen. Also Jennifer Gala's channel. Also channels called 8K Paradise and 8K HDR World play HDR.

This leads me to believe the videos have to be properly coded by the creator. Nothing much we can do, it seems.
