Awesome! I knew there was a way and that it would be simple. Thanks for the quick/useful response. :D

On PC, you can open the File menu using Alt-F.

What's the Mac equivalent?

Windows + 1

You can use ctrl F2 to get to the menubar and press right on the arrow to get to the file but there is no alt+underlined letter thing. Shame. Once you are in the menus you can press letters to jump to places though.

Thank you xUKHCx! Just tried it, it works. Even though there's no alt-underlined letter thing, it's still one tiny step towards freedom from the mouse, which to me equals increased productivity. :) Thanks!

another question: is there a shortcut for doing a spotlight search in iTunes??

If you install the iTunes plugin for Quicksilver, you can set a keyboard trigger to search all your music, or just artists, albums or tracks. You can also create triggers for playing the next/previous song (I use shift + left/right arrow), pausing, resuming, even setting ratings for the current song you're playing.

To get to the preferences just open the Quicksilver window, then press command and the comma key.

Anything you can do in Quicksilver can have an associated shortcut, it's very useful! :)

Any way to change the font size using the keyboard? I know how to highlight the text using Shift, but then I have to use my mouse to select the font size.

Increasing and decreasing the font size is usually Command + or Command - after you've selected it. You can see the shortcut in the menu bar; if you're using TextEdit, for example, under Format > Font are the Bigger and Smaller options, and at the right of each option is the available shortcut.

Hope this helps. :)

I know some Mac Geniuses who would race to do repairs by using keyboard or mouse only. One would be using keyboard only, no mouse or trackpad, another would be using mouse only. Hilarious...
:D

Btw, a person can switch between apps and documents more quickly using OSX than windows.

Found a way to redefine the Ctrl-F2 shortcut to access the menu. Ctrl-F2 is slightly painful on MacBook keyboards because it involves pressing Fn, Ctrl, and the F2 key.

To redefine it..

1. Go to System Preferences

2. Click on Keyboard & Mouse

3. Scroll to "Move focus to the menu bar" and double-click the "^F1" shortcut. It will now prompt you to enter the new key combination.

For me, I made it Option-F, which is like Alt-F :)
