If you look in the Users folder on your hard drive, are there more folders than your own user folder (which will have a house icon, and has your user name), and the Shared folder?
If you see any other user folders, look to see if the Pictures exists, then check inside for your pictures. You might not have access to those folders when logged in as another user. Come back if you need help with that.

Just curious - What version of MS Office did you have? The Microsoft Office folder may show 2011, or 2008, or maybe even 2004 - or just find the version for the Word app.

there was just home and shared. shared was empty

Be sure to look through the other folders in your own user folder, just in case.
The iPhoto library can be moved to other locations, but that doesn't happen accidentally, and doesn't get deleted during an OS X install (when nothing else apparently is missing.)

So, unless you chose to keep your pictures in a different folder, the older pictures are gone.

Going forward - you should consider keeping a backup on an external drive., even if it is for your pictures only, and even better, keep a backup of everything… Time Machine, which is part of your OS X system, makes a backup simple.
